Tim Burton’s glorious penny dreadful, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is a wonderful adaptation of Steven Sondheim’s musical. The black magic begins when Johnny Depp’s white-faced Sweeney steals up the Thames in the dead of night. As the boat slips under a spooky London Bridge it becomes quite clear that Burton was born to film this strange and spooky chamber piece.
The film unfolds like a Grimm tale. Depp’s bitter Sweeney returns to London after 15 years of hurt. The eyes are dead. His voice is a deliberate scrape. His painful life story emerges in hollow songs with haunting, off-key melodies. He wears his grievances like armour. His plan to murder the man who condemned him to a penal colony so that he could rape Sweeney’s wife hinges around the dismal attic above Mrs Lovett’s ailing pie shop.
The atmosphere is vintage Hammer Horror. The gleaming shots of cobbled streets are drained of colour. The chemistry between Depp and Helena Bonham Carter’s genial cockney Mrs Lovett is terrific. Bonham Carter hasn’t thrummed like this for years. Mrs Lovett’s unreciprocated passion for Sweeney is the heart of the film. Her idea of stuffing Sweeney’s clients into pies seems wonderfully sensible.
The pace is a surprise. Burton has pruned Sondheim’s arias to fit the tempo of a thriller – brilliant editing – and the villains are far less stocky. Sacha Baron Cohen delivers a priceless cameo as a jealous unisex rival with plans to blackmail Sweeney. Alan Rickman is a sinister pleasure as Judge Turpin. And Timothy Spall is equally effective as his ultra-violent enforcer, Beadle Bamford. Several patches of fantasy don’t work, but these are few and far between.
Burton has never been one to spare the gore. The sound of skulls cracking open when Sweeney tosses his victims headfirst into the basement is not for the fainthearted. How it performs at the box office will be fascinating.

I hate musicals, but once I got passed the constant singing and actually listened to what they were saying it was absolutely halarious. A total dark comedic tragedy. Johnny Depp and Mrs Bonham Carter were perfect for this role. I saw it three times.

Sweeney Todd is absolutely brilliant... dark, delicious and delightful. Why it hasn't gained a best picture oscar nominanion... is a mystery in itself. I would have also loved to see Tim Burton direct another recent musical 'Phantom of the Opera.'

I have just read your review of Over Her Dead Body, and while I have no wish to see this particular piece of big-screen wall paper - I think the least you can do is get the characters right. Eva Longoria Parker plays the dead fiancee not the psychic!

Loved it!
The gore wasn't THAT bad- it was quite stylised, like the rest of the film- and it's a film about Sweeney Todd- that's what it's about!
Anyways, the cast are good, considering they're not singers, and the production is deliciously gothic- worth the ticket price.

Awesome film. Depp plays a fantastic dark character with a dead expressionless demeanor with a manic glint in his eyes. Helena Bonham-Carter meets Depp with the same obsessive glare. The acting was great, they match each other in every way. Wonderful setting in the colourless streets of old London, editing brilliant, what can i say i absolutely loved it! Not for the faint hearted but well worth going, 10/10.

Too gory by far, my friend felt physically sick. But the acting is brilliant.

Terrific film, the songs are instantly forgettable and the amount of blood left me feeling all overcome with emulsion, but the mood of the film and interplay between the characters is outstanding. Depp rises to the challenge and plays off Helena Bonham-Carter in a menacing yet provocative way. I loved it, I'm still squeamish but I'd go again.
