Definitely, Maybe
This film from the Working Title stable bucks the current trend for dumbed-down, formulaic romantic comedies with meaty characterisation, terrific performances and a political backdrop that is as interesting as the story itself.
Reynolds plays Will Hayes, thirtysomething and heading towards a divorce that he struggles to explain to his daughter (Breslin). After much pestering, Will agrees to tell her the story of his love life, but he changes the names so that she has to guess who her mother is in the story. The three girls in his life are his college sweetheart (Elizabeth Banks), an ambitious journalist (Weisz), and his friend (Isla Fisher). The extended timeframe of the story - it kicks off in 1992 and ends in the present day - gives us a chance to get to know the characters in more depth than the average rom-com permits. The result is a very watchable movie with a sizeable emotional hook.
