I Served the King of England
There is something very dated about this bawdy Czech adaptation of the popular novel by Bohumil Hrabal. Part bedroom farce, part beer commercial, it tells the life story of the waiter Jan Díte, small in stature but huge in ambition - specifically to be a wealthy hotelier surrounded by gorgeous women.
The performances have something of the expressive physicality of the silent movie era, while the backdrop has more exposed bosoms than a 1970s softcore sex film. The film approaches the Nazi occupation and the rise of communism with the same archly whimsical wink at the audience. It's great if you are a fan of beer and breasts, but there is not a lot going for it otherwise.
