This is a film that wears its influences on both sleeves – notably Deliverance and the current cycle of torture flicks – although it’s not nearly as unpleasant as either, a significant failing in a horror film. The mood, in fact, is almost comedic as two nubile hikers venture into the wilderness and come face to face with bear traps, moonshine and lascivious hillbillies.

Where the film does deviate slightly from formula is in its central villains, a Christian fundamentalist couple who detest abortion and profanity but can happily stomach elaborate torment and gruesome incarceration. Still, any film featuring a mock wedding in which the preacher gestures to a slavering halfwit and says, “Now kiss the bride or he will cut your lips off,” can’t be all bad.
