The oddity of the week comes from veteran French director Eric Rohmer. The Romance of Astrea and Celadon takes place in a 17th-century reimagining of a rural idyll, a sun-kissed bucolic Gaul populated by sexually aggressive nymphs and pouty, melodramatic shepherds.

Astrea is a shepherdess who mistakenly believes that her true love, the rather effete shepherd Celadon, has been untrue. She banishes him, and he promptly hurls himself into the nearest river. He’s rescued by a trio of passing nymphs, wearing provocative off-the-shoulder gowns, and nursed back to health by them. But while the head nymph has her eye on the floppy-haired shepherd, poor Celadon is no use to anyone.

Consumed with grief, he vows to live in the woods and eat herbs and roots. The film, talky, tediously overlong and crammed with kitsch, postcard-pretty country scenery, gets exponentially weirder by the minute, culminating in a cross-dressing pseudo-lesbian clinch.
