The East London-born director Kapadia won a Bafta for his debut, The Warrior, yet this attempt to strike a similarly effective match between fable-like storytelling and expansive landscapes just doesn't come off.
The wide Arctic spaces overwhelm the barely-there characterisation, as Yeoh's mysterious tribeswoman and her female companion find their life of isolated routine unbalanced by the arrival of Bean's errant tracker. The ensuing sexual tension is predictable enough; not so the climactic flourish, which aims for the cruel logic of an old folk tale, but startles mainly because it takes leave of basic credibility.
