American Teen
Nanette Burstein’s documentary follows a year in the life of four high-school seniors from the small, conservative town of Warsaw, Indiana. Unfortunately, it doesn’t show us anything we haven’t encountered in a thousand and one films, novels or reality-TV shows about teenage life. Even the four leading figures are familiar teen types: we get the blonde Rich Bitch (Megan), the Arty Misfit (Hannah), the Jock (Colin) and the Geek (Jake). Theirs is the usual self-absorbed soap-opera drama of backstabbing and bitchery, snooty cliques and casual cruelty. Yeah, love hurts and life sucks: so what? What these teens all share is high parental expectations to succeed and peer pressure to fail. American Teen is full of stories, but has nothing to say, no distinct point of view. Here is teen life with all the messy, boring and really interesting bits taken out.
