Tenderness
A dreadful collision of whiny teen angst and pseudo-philosophical middle-aged misery is what’s on offer in this addition to Russell Crowe’s filmography (directed by John Polson). In one of his subdued, ordinary-guy performances, Crowe plays a cop who makes it his business to monitor a young man (Jon Foster) recently released from prison. The youth’s crime was the brutal murder of his parents, and the cop refuses to believe he won’t kill again. But maybe the older man has issues of his own, what with having to look after his comatose wife, and maybe the younger man really is reformable — and might even be weirdly redeemed through his dealings with a new female admirer (Sophie Traub). All of this is as tedious as it sounds.
