Year One
Hunter Zed (Jack Black) and gatherer Oh (Michael Cera) are two Neanderthals who get chased out of the Garden of Eden and make their way through the ancient world, encountering famous figures from the Bible. This is a Hope/Crosby road movie meets Mel Brooks via the Pythons — but without the laughs. Gags are often set up and left without a punch line, and mostly rely on nothing but the brute impact of bad taste. Cera’s understated comic style doesn’t fit the material, and Black’s raised-eyebrow routine gets tiresome. Too silly to be smart, too timid to be subversive about religion — it’s hard to believe it’s directed and co-written by the once great Harold Ramis
