Strawberry and Chocolate
A brief season of Cuban films at the Barbican, London, includes this 1994 drama by Tomas Gutierrez Alea. More conventional in its form than the director’s best-known work, Memories of Underdevelopment (1968), it tells of a young man (Vladimir Cruz) whose repressed subversive instincts are liberated through his friendship with a queeny, literature-loving homosexual (Jorge Perugorria). This was the first openly gay character to appear in a Cuban movie, and you might find a certain academic interest in seeing how the film pitches its pro-tolerance preaching: it’s bolder than you might expect from something made under Castro’s dictatorship, but stops short of publicising the full savagery of the regime’s treatment of homosexuals. Studying the film’s ideology can only do so much, however, to see you through a trite drama. Nowadays, this sort of thing is done with much more dazzle by Almodovar.
