In its own way, the German drama Cloud 9 confronts almost as many taboos as Brüno does. Inge (played with devastating honesty by Ursula Werner) is at the tail end of middle age and has been married for 30 years, when, suddenly and hopelessly, she falls in love with another man.
Passion, in this tender, intimate story, is ageless. Inge and her new 70-year-old beau giggle like teenagers; the sex scenes are filmed with a candour that even actors in the first flush of youth might flinch at. However, the melodramatic ending sits a little awkwardly with the empathetic intelligence of the rest of the film.
