1 Mean Streets: Mook/Pool hall scene

Argumentative dialogue between Johnny boy and the pool hall owner soon erupts into an amazing scuffle, the contradictory joyful sounds of the Marvellets, ‘Mr Postman’ mixed with violent visuals blends together to cement a technique that would be recreated in Scorsese films over and over again.

2 Mean Streets: De Niro walks into bar and meets Keitel

The music and style of this film makes you want to be there, have these people as your mates, Johnny boy seems to up the ante of every scene he is in, with him and Keitel playing in perfect harmony. This particular scene sees De Niro strut in with two girls he has just charmed, one of the greatest characters in film history.

3 Dead Man's Shoes: Sunny confronts Richard

Paddy Considine’s on screen presence blew me away in this scene. Sunny is portrayed as a powerful character and all the other cast members seem in awe of him, when he confronts Richard all of his power is flipped on its head. Considine is mesmerising and comes across as a complete psychotic.

4 My Neighbour Totoro: Waiting for the cat bus

Miyazaki’s film is truly magical, the character design and beautifully crafted animation make this film an inspiration to any animator. This scene in particular lingers in my memory, the composition of the young girls standing next to this huge hairy beast both holding umbrellas in what is to become terental rain.

5 Irreversible : fire extinguishers

The surreal camera movements and disjunctive soundtrack Gasper Noe employs makes this opening sequence of irreversible one of my most memorable. With disturbing and highly shocking visuals this kicks the film of in the most astonishing way.

6 Amelie : opening sequence

The montage of Amelie’s birth and child hood memories is visually stunning. The clever editing and beautiful cinematography, mixed with Yann Tiersen start this film of as it means to go on.

7 Lord of War – opening credits

The life of a bullet. The cinematography and linking of shots to keep a consistent flow in the edit in this is amazing, starting in a metal forming factory and ending in someone’s head.

8 Sexy Beast – on the plane

Ben Kingsley ruthless performance as Don Logan sees him at first tormenting Ray Winstone’s family, eventually they get rid of him. The viewer feels relieved for Winstone when Kingsley is finally on the plane on his way home. Kingsley starts another aggressive rant with the air hostess which sees him ejected and back for round two.

9 Belleville Rendez-Vous’: The growing up scene with mother and son on bikes

The character design of the old lady riding behind her muscle bound son around the streets of Paris is portrayed to its fullest in this scene. The twitch in her eye, her orthopaedic shoe and whistle blowing to the beat as her son strides to be the greatest tour de france athlete ever.

10 Pulp Fiction: Winston Wolf scene

The dialogue in this scene is hilarious but also unnerving. The guest appearance of Keitel as a professional problem solver, results in some unforgettable lines.
