Best director Danny Boyle [comes on stage jumping]: "My kids are too young to remember this, but I swore that if this miracle ever happened, I would receive it in the spirit of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh, so that's what that was about. Thanks everyone at Warner Brothers for passing on to Fox Searchlight. Just to say to Mumbai - unending, unseparable, unborn - all of you who helped us make the film and all of you who didn't, thank you so much. You dwarf even the sky."
Best film producer Christian Colson (Slumdog Millionaire): "When we started out we had no stars, we had no power, no muscle. What we had was a film that inspired mad love in anyone who read it. We had a genius in Danny Boyle"
Best actress winner Kate Winslet (The Reader): "I'd be lying if I hadn't made a version of this speech before. I must have been eight-years-old, and this [holds up statue] was a shampoo bottle. Well it's not a shampoo bottle now. I'd like to thank my family who are in this room somewhere. Dad, whistle so I know where you are. I'd like to thank my fellow nominees. These goddesses. Thank you so very much. I think we all can't believe we are in the same category as Meryl Streep at all."
Best actor winner Sean Penn (Milk): "You Commie, homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often. I'm very proud to live in a country that creates courageous artists, and Mickey Rourke rises again. He is my brother."
Kim Ledger [accepting the award on behalf of Best supporting actor Heath Ledger's young daughter Matilda, who, under Academy rules, is the official recipient of the statuette]: "This is ever so humbling - being amongst such wonderful people and such a wonderful industry. This award would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be accepted by you all here - his peers within an industry he loved."
Heath's mother Sally Ledger Bell said the 28-year-old had added "so much excitement and inspiration to our lives".
Best supporting actress winner Penelope Cruz: "It's not going to be 45 seconds, I can tell you that [and it certainly wasn't]. Has anyone ever fainted, because I might be the first one? I can not talk about great characters without mentioning my friend Pedro Almodovar. I want to dedicate this to my parents and friends..."
Slumdog Millionaire writer Simon Beaufoy: "There are certain places you never imagine standing, for me it's the Moon, the South Pole, the Miss World podium, and here. Repressed English writers have to write love stories because they can't say what they really mean"
Milk writer Dustin Lance Black: "If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he'd want me to say to all those gay and lesbian kids out there tonight - who have been told that they are less than by their churches, by the government, or by their families - that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures that are valued. No matter what anyone tells you God loves you. And thank you God for giving us Harvey Milk."
Best Animated short winner Kunio Kato: "So very heavy. Thank you Academy. Thank you animation. Thank you my company. Dōmo arigatō, Mr. Roboto."
Michael O'Connor (Best Costume for The Duchess): "Keira Knightley: you are one classy lady"
Slumdog Cinematographer Anthony Dodd Mantle: "I could thank thousands of people, I can't do it. All the people who've worked with me on all of the films I've done over the last 20 years, I'll try and thank you every day from now on"
Man on Wire's Phillipe Petit: "This is the shortest speech in Oscar history. Yes! [as he goes on to balance Oscar]"
Slumdog's A R Rahman (after winning best song): "All my life I've had a choice of hate or love, I chose love and I'm here. God Bless"
Greg Cannom: [reads a list of pretty much everyone who worked on the movie... Walks off]
