05:08 Slumdog wins Best Picture; eight Oscars total
It did it. After an incredible night, Slumdog Millionaire takes its eighth Oscar of the night, and the biggest on offer from the Academy Awards: Best Picture. By my count, there were ten Oscar wins for Britain last night, if you include all the Slumdog gongs. Not a bad haul, really.
Now I'm off to the parties - my dispatches from which will be in Tuesday's T2.
05:02 Rourke's tux not enough; Penn wins, lets 'em have it
"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns!" declares Sean Penn after winning Best Actor for Milk, the biopic of America's first openly gay politician. "I did not expect this," he continues, adding that, "I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me."
Penn was pretty much a sure-thing to win the Oscar as a protest vote by the Academy after California banned gay marriage in a shock November vote.
Said Penn: "For those of us who the signs of hatred [from anti-gay protestors] as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect on their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue their support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone."
And of course he also made an Obama reference: "I'm very, very proud to live in a country to elect an elegant man as its president."
04:47 Winslet wins, tells Meryl to 'suck it up'
The speech isn't so bad. It's breathless but blub-free. She begins by declaring that she's been practicing it since the age of eight in the mirror with a shampoo bottle (Toby Young just Twittered: 'Oscar shampoo bottles. Marketing: get on it'). Then she thanks her Dad (who is in the audience), saying, "Dad, whistle or something, then I'll know where you are." He immediately whistles and the camera pans in on him. Crikey. Winslet's Dad is scary. It all gets annoying after this. She thanks her co-nominees, this time avoiding names (presumably she still can't remember who Angelina Jolie is). Then she says, "I think none of us can believe we're nominated in a category with Meryl Streep at all. Meryl, you just have to suck that up." What on earth does this mean? And that's that.
