Puzzles are good for your mental health. Research has shown that daily exercises can boost memory and concentration skills.
Studies have found a correlation between increased levels of mental stimulation and reduced risk of dementia, while simple acts such as reading aloud, doing arithmetic or solving a puzzle can increase blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, which stimulates activity in the rest of the brain.
Analysis also shows that connections between brain cells can be reinforced by repetition, suggesting that the brain is like a muscle that needs stretching from time to time.
The Workout is a daily brain-training exercise to improve the resilience of your mind. We have chosen two quick but intriguing puzzles that we are sure will quickly become addictive.
Cell Blocks is a logic puzzle with a spatial element. It originated in Japan, where it is called Shikaku, which means Divide by Squares. Add Up is a simple arithmetic game which you should try to do in your head.
The rules for both puzzles are easy to grasp, but to give you a head start on Cell Blocks (and to get you hooked).
Many of the brain-training exercises out there feel like maths homework. We hope that The Workout will become a fun part of your daily routine.

ADD UP puzzle Pascals Triangle, was not quite as simple as suggested for 30 seconds mental arithmetic. If every cell on row 16 is one, what is value of top cell? Timesonline changed my equal-lateral triangle to a right angled Sierpinski triangle! Add on Primes, Magic11, Fibonnacci, Quincunx, much too difficult for early morning. Well done to discontinue.

Mike Doherty's tip clipped seconds off the April 12th puzzle. The other add up solving lines are
1
1 1
1 2 1
1 3 3 1
1 4 6 4 1 ( Mike's)
This ,of course, is the Pascal's Triangle, beloved of the binomial theorem. Wiki shows the co-efficients to 16 lines. That would really keep the grey matter ticking over, and I expect there are a 'two minute Times2 crossworders', capable of holding all those co-efficients in their head, and mentally solving a 16 line puzzle as well. Would you vote for them, which Council Tax valuation band are they in, can they also sing or play football, and how many were at the recent Grove and G7 meetings ?

I agree that any use of your brain power is a very healthy daily project. My wife and I found that playing Bridge to be most stimulating.. This game requires a great dealof consentration and memory. For those who can find the time, try to take Bridge lessons and get in on the fun.
