2 for 1 tickets to Casablanca, this coming Monday

In this partially completed example, all the digits 1 to 4 must appear in every row and column. In each thick-line “block”, the target number in the top left-hand corner is calculated from the digits in all the cells in the “block”, using addition (+) as indicated by the symbol above the puzzle.

KenKen 16 is possible by logic.
Easy bits: 400x must be 4455, 6+ must be 1122
Using (col, row) notation from bottom left:
360x must have a 1 or 2 which has to be at (3,3) and (2,3) has to be 5
432x cannot be 22366 or would be two 2s in col 4 so (4,3) must be 4
720x cannot be 22566 or would be two 2s in col 4 so (3,6) must be 4, (6,6) and (4,4) must be 5
9+ must be 1233 so 720x must be 14566 and 432x is 23346
The rest all fits into place quite easily. Hope this helps.
Toby, Edinburgh, Scotland
I'm bored of Sudoku but KenKen has brought puzzles back to life. Tips: start with single solutions e.g 11+ can only be 5+6, then go for the big numbers and work out the permutations (40 must = 4x5x2) and then resort to Soduko logic to solve the puzzle. Great fun and just one success equals addiction!
james mills, Shaftesbury, Wilts
We have successfully and fairly easily solved all KenKen except no 16. Even with the answer we still do not see how to do it by logic alone, without a trial and error method of successive guessing of various possibilities to see which set of guesses works. Does anyone have a logical solution to this one?
Al, Liverpool,
Delighted to see the return of 2 Su Dokus on the back page of T2. Thank you. Someone please tell me how to start a Kenken when you have no block with just one number?
John Morley, Seaford , East Sussex, England
Why haven't the wonderful KenKen puzzles been featuring in the The Times recently I am really enjoying them and have been disappinted that they are not a regular feature.
janfield, stubbington, hampshire
Just getting into my stride with the KenKen on back page of Part 2 - now it's gone! Please put it back, otherwise I have to wait until home time before getting the main paper back from my husband to do the one inside that!
Anne, Cambridge, Cambs
I'm really enjoying these, but would love some harder ones as they only take me about 5 minutes. The ones without any signs were a good challenge, but there haven't been any of these since they were introduced.
Has anyone found any others on the web?
Louise, Leeds, UK
How to solve the problem of only one sudoko a day.My husdand prints of blank sudoku grids off the net.

He copies mine out on to the blank grid while I make the coffee and then we have a race as who can finish first..

It is impossible. Try changing the 3+ in the second column to a 3÷ and it works. I'm glad that the setters have problems distinguishing between the addition and division symbols too!
Toby, Edinburgh,
I agree Louise - I think the +3 grid is supposed to be +8 (2 and 6) otherwise it just won't work. Have rubbed holes in my paper trying to work it out!!
Mollie, Coventry,
Has anyone tried today's KenKen?
I don't think it is possible.
Louise, Leeds, UK
Have done some KenKen puzzles up to No. 8, though not quite sure how (still learning techniques). One thing is clear, within each thick-line "block" a digit CAN be repeated, unlike Killer, provided it is not in the same line or column.
Brian, Meopham, Kent
Thoroughly enjoy KenKen. Have found ordinary Suduko boring and always do the killer.
Please keep KenKen
Liz Norwich
Liz, Norwich,
I'm pining for harder sudokus early in the week, and think that Codeword could be binned - it's pretty mindless and a waste of time. Having 2 sudokus gave a good range and the easier ones were a nice fallback if I got stuck. The Saturday Samurai at an easy level is a bit pointless too - time-consuming without any challenge.
Liz Bass, Shepton Mallet, Somerset
Please revert to the two Sudoko puzzles each day. It would also be more enjoyable if Saturdays Samurai puzzles went back to the level of difficulty that pertained when they were first introduced. Current puzzles are simply not demanding.
Jackie Jones, Reading, Berks.
Have Kenken if you must but please not at the price of 2 Su Doku. Some days we are left with only the easy and that is not enough. Why can't Kenken be placed where the easy brain teasers are and then you could give us back our second Su Doku. Alternatively, scrap the easy version because that is now just a waste of time unless you are really a beginner and I do not think there are too many of them around now.
PS, Essex,
I am not happy. Some time ago the crossword was removed from the back page. Now you downgrade Su Doku to one a day with no tough ones till later in the week. If the Kenken is to be retained- let's retain the Su Dokus and get rid of the Codeword. I don't know anyone who does it. You must serve the needs of your puzzlers better than this.
John Sloan, Ticknall,
Agree with Keith - all was harmony in our house when there were two Su Dokus every day - one each. Now neither of us can do KenKen and we fight over the one Su Doku.
Please can we have two again ?
Jakki Cereda, Surrey,
Can you use the same number twice in a shape? If not how do you get 80X out of 3 numbers (todays puzzle)? I can only do that as 5x4x4
Clive, London,
Nick Diplock. It is allowed as long as the two 4s are not in the same row or column.
FR, Basingstoke, UK
Please, please give two Su Doku each day. My wife completes up to Difficult, I am allowed Fiendish. Life is too short for Super Fiendish and KenKen!
Keith Nimmo, Glasgow, Scotland
Why are you waiting for solving tips?
Get on and work out your own!
KenKen excellent puzzle, please keep printing them.
Mike Doherty, St Albans, Hertfordshire
kenken today, bottom right is 80x which I think can only be 4x5x4 = 80. is this allowed, ie two 4s.
Nick Diplock, london,
I discovered the Ken Ken puzzles in the weekend newspaper last Saturday and have been hooked ever since. I can't get enough of them. I prefer them to Sudoku which has become a bit boring. Only problem is I cannot find any books or magazines with Ken Ken yet and hope to see them in the shops soon. Thanks for introducing this fun and challenging puzzle to me - it keeps my brain ticking.
Ronelle Meikleham, London,
Must say thoroughly enjoyed todays two KenKens (my first).
A refreshing change from years of sudoku. All those who cannot differentiate + and divide really should visit their optician.
Please do keep it , not everyone is a soduku fanatic and I for one welcome the variety.
Simon Prowse, lancashire,
Still waiting for the Kenken solving tips. Or should we not believe all that we read in the press? Surely not true of the Times!?
Trevor Johnson, Emsworth, Hants
I love the new Kenken. It's yet another challenge and brings more variation to the games page. Please don't get rid of it! I don't really care for the Su Dokus anymore (may have overplayed them) and have always preferred the challenge of the Killer.
Jane, London,
I love the new KenKen. The first one I saw was No. 4 - a difficult - and I had no idea what to do. I managed to work it out and really enjoyed it. At first, I kept forgetting the number 1 in multiplication and division!! It's a great puzzle. I can't wait for more.
Toni, Derbyshire
Toni, Castle Donington, Derbyshire
Please, please can we have the 2nd Sudoku back. I was just at the point of graduating from 'difficult' to 'fiendish'. Now we have Kenken which leaves me cold. Hopefully it will disappear for good after the London mayoral election in May!
Marilyn Williamson, London,
I am struggling with this Kenken probably because I am more annoyed that the 2nd Su Doku has had to give way for it. Please bring back the 2nd Su Doku. I always particularly enjoy the Thursday edition with a diffiicult and a fiendish. The super fiendish on a Friday was always a bit too tough but I enjoyed the challenge. I am just getting into Killer now too. Kenken leaves me cold at the moment and where are the tips? Keep it if you must but not at the expense of the 2nd Su Doku. Please?
John Morley, Seaford , East Sussex, England
we got started on march25th but then we phizzled out. that is why i am on this site know - looking for help but i can't find any. i like the new puzzle
ros, ruislip,
This example of how to solve Kenken is not sufficient. What is needed is an example of how to start one. I believe a good one to use would be the the March 25 puzzle which is described as "easy" but which i find impossible to start.
Chris , Ilkley, England
Kenken is a nice newspaper friendly puzzle. I would be disappointed to see it leave the T2 puzzle page as it gives a good 5-10 minute logic puzzle for when a killer sudoku or a crossword might require more of a time investment then I'd like. It's really fun for a small cutesy little grid. Don't underestimate it. I judge people for not understanding it.
I'd also like to take the time to say that some people are very negative about new puzzles and although I do enjoy a good crossword, they are by no rhyme or reason the gold standard of puzzling. They're just older and more common. Move with The Times.
Jak Marshall, Lancaster, UK
We have been married for 41 years and the loss of the 2nd Sudoku from the T2 has almost lead to divorce. How can we do one each if there is only 1?
Please save my marriage and put back T2 to the way it was.
Yours in desperation
Barry Palmer, Waterlooville, Hants
Please can we have some more detailed KenKen tips. The example you give is too simple to help do the published ones. At least with SoDoku you know when you've got a number in the right place. And please bring back the choices of SoDoku. I had just managed to progress to the Fiendish but am not ready for the Killer.
Lucy DeVille, London,
I miss the double sudoku and I too cannot find the solving tips. Is finding them meant to be another puzzle?
Margaret Barron, Minehead,
I've just discovered Kenken. I haven't a clue what is required and how to go about getting the right result. aybe I've lost too many brain cells. Can you explain in detail please and give me afighting chance. I miss the double SoDoku!
Les Bell, Ashington, Northumberland
Glad someone else has trouble with + and divide, which I can only differentiate in daylight or with a magnifying glass. How about using / to indicate divide?
Mike Halsall, West Lulworth, Dorset
Kenken is a frightful little waste of space. The higgledy piggledy puzzle page on the back of T2 is an ugly layout mess and surely it is now time to stop printing pathetically easy Sudoku ,and those weedy "brain trainers" on p2 of the masthead section. As for Codeword, there are harder ones in tabloids. Thank goodness you don't dare mess with the Times Crossword (I hope.....) and at least my 9 year old twin grandchildren like the T2 one.
Frances Smith , Ashford Kent, UK
1 Please, please bring back the choice of 2 levels of Su Doku.
2 What's that small square puzzle with the chance of winning an ipod touch meant to be? It's solvable in half a min.
3 Ditto Byran Bowen's question.
Poppy, Hexham, Northumberland
Where oh where are the tips to solving the puzzles?
s.beer, chard,
Thank you Barbara Honey; I too am confused by 2+ which must be 1+1
Chris Fell, Newmarket, uk
I suspect Barbara Honey may have misread 2 (divide) as 2 (plus). It's not always easy to tell which is intended. Having said that, the puzzle is an interesting new variation, but limiting it to 1 - 6 does mean that it is relatively easy to complete in the puzzles offered so far.
Derek Mellor, Burscough, Lancs
My paper says this site contains solving tips.
Where are they?
Bryan Bowen, Goodworth Clatford, UK
Having been doing Sudoku for years but cannot do Kenken. In puzzles where it says 2+ what else can that be apart form 1+1 which doesn't work?
Barbara Honey, Halifax,
Great brain training.
Have just done a few of the kenken puzzles from saturdays
paper.2 hours of time has just flown past !
Next time i am on a long haul flight, thats what i shall be doing !
Great stuff .
