PREFAB SPROUT: Steve McQueen (Kitchenware)
It is an overused exhortation, but here, it’s true: this really is an album you can’t afford to be without. Swoon, the Durham quartet’s debut, alerted fans of literate, quicksilver pop, but it took this 1985 follow-up to reveal Paddy McAloon’s genius. Buttressed by a phenomenal rhythm section and fairy-dusted with Wendy Smith’s breathy harmonies, tracks such as Goodbye Lucille #1, When Love Breaks Down and Bonny raised the hairs on the back of thousands of necks. A bonus disc of an acoustic McAloon revisiting the songs last year includes a flamenco version of Faron Young that is devastating. DC
