He was criticised, laughed at and flat out told that white boys from Stoke shouldn’t rap. Now Robbie Williams is having the last laugh.
Rudebox, the song that saw Williams panned by critics, has been nominated for an Ivor Novello songwriting award.
Released last year, Rudebox was a new sound for the singer and it went down like a lead balloon.
Not only was the single roasted, the album Rudebox failed to sell as expected and was named the worst album of the year at the NME Awards.
Recently out of rehab, Williams will no doubt be pleased to hear of his nomination in the International Hit of the Year category.
He is up against Madonna and her single Sorry and the Scissor Sisters’ hit I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’.
Other nominations for the songwriting and composing awards include Amy Winehouse for Rehab and Arctic Monkeys for When the Sun Goes Down.
Casino Royale has been nominated for Best Original Film Score.
The awards will be held at The Grosvenor House hotel in central London on May 24.

I must confess I didn't like Rudebox when I first heard it - it was sooo different that my brain couldn't comprehend it - and I think that's where the problem lay - tabloids gave it a couple of listens and wrote it off - it takes about ten listens to really appreciate the complexity of this song, musically and lyrically - it's certainly not "commercial" but if you have the patience to appreciate it, it is a work of genius. I really admire Robbie for setting new standards and producing work which will inspire other songwriters and musicians. He is hugely underrated, and undoubtedly and extremely clever man! Two fingers up to the british press eh rob ?? Well done mate !! Rudebox is a fantastic album and u deserve to win the ivor novello. Long may you continue to make great music !!!
Jo, lancs,
Robbie is a very talented man, and the british press give him 'stick' for no reason, I think he would be saying you can stick your comments where the sun doesn't shine, and that would be very tame for Robbie !!!!!!!
'Rudebox 'was slated for no reason as it was a bit different, but has great songs on it and hasn't that been proved.
Well done Robbie,
NOTHING LESS THAN YOU DESERVE

I wasn't impressed by the single and thought the video was an Adidas advert at first, but he wasn't trying to be the new Eminem, was he? Bear this in mind, too - it's not the lyrical content that has earned him the nomination.
And if white boys from Stoke shouldn't rap, then I guess middle-class Home Counties white boys whose dads were bishops shouldn't become world-renowned hip hop DJs then... oh.
Lovelight was my personal favourite of the Rudebox album - surprisingly soulful, a nice fat bassline. I like some of Robbie's other stuff, but this was sorely underrated.
Amelia Jane, London,
What sweet justice, I never understood the snowballing negativity to Rudebox the album, the credible music critics gave this album very high praise but the tabloids turned it around into a negative, which surely was a crime of injustice.
There are some very good tracks on it, I think the 80's and 90's must be Robbie at his lyrical genius, The Actor at Robbie's rocking best, and the former must surely be a pure slice of Robbie for who and what he is, what a story they relate.
Keep it up Robbie, the music scene would be poorer without you, your diversity and huge personality are unmatchable. Well done.

rudebox is an amazing single and an amazin album he deserves to win well done rob i love u lol :) hope u win
belinda, coalville, england
Congratulations Robbie on yet another Ivor Novello nomination. Sweet revenge for all those who knocked you for producing such a diverse song/album as Rudebox. Your fans recognise your genius; keep doing the music that makes you happy.
Linda, Basingstoke,
Well deserved too! Well done Robbie, hope it wins.
Julie, Liverpool, England, England
fantastic news for Robbie, his fans always knew that it was a hit, even in the UK. No.4 is not a flop, people should not believe our lousy UK press.
Rudebox the album, is great too, Okay, you have to get used to the different style on some of the songs, but once you get used to it, Rudebox, is an amazing and diverse album from Robbie. Many, many great tracks.
Justice at last for a great British talent. Well, done Robbie
Jackie, Bournemouth, UK
