Since 1957, the United Kingdom has participated in every Eurovision Song Contest.
Britain didn't take part in the inaugural competition in 1956 because the BBC missed the deadline for submissions.
Rumours that the then 19-year-old Sir Terry Wogan was doing work experience in the BBC postroom have never been denied.
Britain has won Eurovision five times, second only to Ireland. 15 second places are testament to our hard earned reputation as the competition's eternal runner-up.
In 1997, Katrina and The Waves won by one of the highest scores ever with the catchy Love Shine A Light, which clearly struck Eurovision gold, receiving 79 per cent of the total amount of votes available.

Jemini were out of key, out of tone throughout the whole song. Just hideous to listen to
azza boi, swansea ,
I would like to point out the fact that the 1975 UK entrant The Shadows is not on your list of successful British performers at all! They came second.
With a true British sense of humour, they crack jokes about their loss even now in their concerts: "We have only lost the Eurovision Song Contest once, our singer [Cliff Richard] has lost it twice."

79% is worked out as follows: 24 countries could give 12 points. (24 x 12 = 288). The UK scored 227 points. (227 / 288) x 100 = 78.81944%. Not bad a bad result, eh?!
Steve, Leeds, UK
Love shine a light got 79% of the total amount of votes? How is that possible? Surely the top score you can get from each country is 12, while 30 or so other points go to other countries?

Samantha Janus - A Message to Your Heart. Provided the answer to the question: does it matter if you can't sing? But who cares? She looked lovely.

My fave UK entry has to be "Save your kisses for me" It's cute without being twee. Don't know about that last line, though !
BJ Murphy, Kintnersville, USA
Puppet On A String by Sandie Shaw. It always makes me smiles when I hear it, no matter what I'm busy with. A good song, a classic of it's time. (By the way: my mother would have voted Cliff Richards' Power To All Our Friends). Greetings from the Netherlands
Ton Novio, Utrecht, Netherlands
A small correction. The UK didn't participate in 1958 either!
Richard, Norfolk, UK
Cliff Richard - Congratulations. It should have won but Ireland voted against us. I remember it well!
