MOVE over long-haired youth and mud-spattered tent. Today’s discerning rock fan wants valet parking, sofas, cuisine from a celebrity chef and Cloudy Bay in the wine cooler.
This summer, concert-goers are paying thousands of pounds to watch their favourite stars from a vantage point as luxurious as anything in their own homes.
The £500 tickets to see Barbra Streisand at the revamped London Dome are dwarfed by the £7,500 season ticket to watch five concerts on the lawns of a school in the Hamptons, the chic area of upper New York state.
For that the concert-goers get to lounge on ottomans and “daybeds” plumped with Moroccan pillows while waiters serve champagne and food prepared by their choice of 20 chefs. There will even be flat-screen televisions showing the concerts in the portable toilets so they need not miss a moment of the music.
The concert series – called Social – is hardly cutting edge. It includes Billy Joel, James Taylor, Prince, Dave Matthews and Tom Petty. Ticket sales are being limited to 1,000 with some of the proceeds going towards the school’s scholarship fund.
The organisers, Bulldog Entertainment, are so confident it will be a success that they are planning similar events in Europe, including one in London this autumn.
Joe Meli, 33, the firm’s founder, said: “I started Bulldog so I could offer people a hassle-free and luxurious experience when attending events.
“From this stemmed the concert series where we produce the entire experience, giving our guests great artists in a private party environment.”
The ticket price just pips the £6,000 plus Vat it will cost to stay in Camp Kerala, a row of 75 luxury Indian tents that will house the most pampered guests at this month’s Glastonbury festival in Somerset.
They will sleep on king-size beds imported from Italy under duck-down duvets and step out each morning on to sheepskin rugs. The tents’ inner linings are adorned with hand-sewn mirrors and gold stars. Each has a private washroom with hot showers. The guests also get a barbecue banquet, brunches, a wine cellar that include Château Margaux and Cloudy Bay and the use of a masseur.
Paul Gambaccini, the broadcaster and music industry expert, said: “I’m not surprised if someone who has been seeing concerts for 40 years now wishes to see them in better conditions than the mud and wet.
“I would be shocked if an 18-year-old wanted to do this, but if a 58-year-old wanted to, hey, I’m glad they are still into the music.”
