Singer Pete Doherty has been warned he may be sentenced to a prison term after pleading guilty to drug charges today.
Doherty, 28, was more than two hours late arriving at West London Magistrates Court to face charges of possessing Class A and Class C drugs, causing District Judge Davinder Lachhar to issue an arrest warrant.
When he did arrive, the Babyshambles singer, wearing his trademark trilby hat and a dark suit, pleaded guilty to possessing crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine.
He also pleaded guilty to two driving offences before facing the new charge of failing to appear in court without reasonable excuse – the result of arriving at midday today instead of 9.30am.
Doherty was arrested on May 5 this year after his car was stopped by officers in Kensington High Street, London.
The court heard he had herbal cannabis in a coat pocket and a rock of crack cocaine in his trouser pocket.
More drugs, including ketamine and heroin, were revealed when he was strip searched at a police station.
Mr Curran argued that the charges related to "small amounts" of illegal drugs and that the singer had been working extremely hard on his new album at the time of his arrest.
He told the court Doherty had also had "a difficulty in his personal life which led to him being caught in this situation where he was driving the vehicle".
Mr Curran said it was clear from Doherty's history and the fact he is already under a community order that he has for some time been addicted to drugs and specifically to crack and heroin.
He added that doctors felt he had made progress and improved since February last year, but the judge questioned to what extent things had changed.
She said: "It seems that there has not been much difference in his use of drugs."

Singer Pete Doherty pleaded guilty to drug charges today after arriving at court so late that a warrant for his arrest was issued
I work in the substance misuse field and the young people I see, have been to prison for much less than this. I'm not saying prison would do him any good (it wouldn't) but at least it would show kids who wish to emulate him, that justice is fair despite one's 'connections'
Nick, Liverpool, UK
Can anyone explain why this man has not been sent to goal? Many others who have done far less have been - are the judiciary so dazzled by celebrity that all common sense is cast to the wind? This sends a dreadful message to so many different constituencies that the very act of not sentencing this rather silly young junkie to prison might itself be considered reckless if not actually criminal behaviour. Is his very modest talent and association with another rather good looking but behaviourally challenged young(?) woman sufficient explanation of this repeatedly aberrant behaviour by the courts? I really would appreciate the new Minister for Justice offering some explanation as to how police time, Court credibility and public confidence can be challenged successfully so repeatedly by this person.

Lisa, do you really believe all people who aren't poverty stricken take drugs to look cool? Money does not buy happiness. And people who wish death on him is in worst shape mentally than he is.
Natalie, Pennington Gap, Virginia
Another case of one rule for so called "celebrities" and the common people. How does he keep getting away with it, all the crocodile tears he has shed each time he has offended is really too much. If it was any other young person from a poor community he/she would have been sent down without question , they would not have had the option of entering "rehab" either that seems to be reserved for the "celebs" with money again. Come on judges wake up and put these wastes of space gang where they belong, IN GAOL!!
Penny, Nelson, UK
scott: agreed. odd that so many people felt paris hilton deserved to go to jail but the threat of jail for a serial offender like pete doherty is harsh. he needs a good wake up call.
bushra, bradford, uk
I have no sympathy for him. He doesn't have the 'excuse' of a traumatic or poverty-stricken background to account for his starting to use drugs - he's a nice middle-class boy who wants to be a cool rebel.
If he was from a council estate, he'd have been gaoled long ago. I think it's time he was told 'if you are caught in posession of drugs again you will go to gaol for a long time'. And let's see what that does for his career.
Lisa van Gijssel, Newport, Gwent
well rehab or jail hopefully this will make him learn his lesson and he will choose rehab and clean up!! I love him and wish him all the best!
Hannah, glastonbury,
Surely the time has come to say enough is enough and show this guy that he is not above the law as he himself believes that he is.
A prison sentence and rehab is the only thing he will understand.
Larry Gorman, Ellesmere Port,
he is recovering and should be given more time to get off the drugs
good luck pete
tom , newcastle, uk
I think you are all being a bit harsh on Pete Doherty the guys a genius!.So he was caught in possesion of the reported drugs, was he under the influence of them when driving?.These do gooders who live in another world to Pete Doherty should realy mind their own business does it realy effect them what he does?.He knows the score if you live by the sword you die by the sword, rather a day as a lion than a mouse.Pete will get through this but on his own terms because thats what addictions do to you.
GARY, DUNSTABLE, ENGLAND
putting him prison is not the answer, there is just as much drugs in prison. He needs to make a decision and go to rehab for the right reasons, for himself and he needs to do the course properly....... i personally hope he does because im a big fan of his....
Jon, essex, england
Enoughs enough.
Lock him up, throw away the key.Enough pandering to this overdose victim waiting to happen.
Then again, thats a good idea....Leave him out ! Another few hits and he'll be done in.
Trilby for sale !! Any buyers ?
Dave, Lincoln,
Hilton gets thrown in jail for driving drunk, this bozo gets caught for driving with coke, crack, heroin, etc and he gets off with 5 days of rehab? What a joke. Time to teach the boy a lesson he won't forget rather than a slap on the wrist.

Scott, London,
Let's hear it for the judge - about time there was some plain speaking, instead of pussyfooting round this dopey character - who is he anyway?
Mary McFarlane, Long Compton, Warwickshire
5 days is not enough, he needs something alot more permanent. im a fan of his but he needs a shock to make him want to give up the drugs and i dont think this is it sadly, perhaps prison is the only way?
Richard, Liverpool,
