Missionaries have entered to spread the word of God, rock bands stage gigs and hold press conferences, news agency Reuters even has a virtual bureau, now a philharmonic orchestra is planning the UK's first ever live virtual concert in Second Life.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra hopes to introduce classical music to a new audience when it performs to an audience of 100 ticket winners on September 14.
Philharmonic Chief Executive Michael Elliott said: “Orchestras today are committed to reaching out to make their music more accessible to encourage new audiences."
“That means exploring and embracing the opportunities presented by new technology.”
Vasily Petrenko, the youngest Principal Conductor in the Philharmonic’s 165 year history, will lead the orchestra as they perform works by Rachmaninov, Ravel and two contemporary Liverpool composers.
Petrenko, singer Kate Royal and composer Kenneth Hesketh will be represented during the cyber event by animated Second Life characters known as avatars. The ticket winners, also represented by avatars, will watch the concert live as audience members.
The audience will ‘sit’ in a 3-D virtual version of the orchestra’s home venue, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall which will be built on a virtual island already purchased by the Philharmonic.
During the virtual concert, audience members will be able to interact with each other, buy sweets from the refreshments shop and even nip to the loo.
“The social aspect of Second Life means audience members will be able to chat to each other (via instant messaging) about their experience and even cough without incurring the displeasure of the conductor and fellow audience members,” explained the Philharmonic’s Executive Director, Millicent Jones.
After the concert they will be able to meet Petrenko, Royal and Hesketh at a question and answer session in the bar.
The day after the performance, the Philharmonic will make the concert available to all of Second Life’s 8 million users.

Yes, good point Ecoandle, how does one win a ticket?
Simon Brisbane, QLD, you listen through your speakers or headphones.

Okay, maybe they had some misrepresentations in the press but give them a break for gods sake! At least they are trying. Perhaps the reporter didn't quite understand how sl works and that there have been other live performances. All i can say is Good Luck on the performance and of course not everything is going to be as "perfect" as it is in rl. Buildings aren't as well defined and the sound quality isn't as good as sitting in the front row of a concert hall. Plus if you want the perfect realism of rl quit flying and teleporting!
Jody G., Bismarck, ND
May be I am missing something.
How do you hear the orchestra playing?
Simon, Brisbane, QLD
Sounds fun...How does one become a winner of one of the 100 tickets?
Ecoandle, Germantown, MD
They aren't saying it is the first virtual concert for S/L...they are saying that it is the Liverpool Philharmonic's first virtual concert...

It's worth noting that the Sinfonia of Leeds performed a live concert in Second Life in early February, and I was lucky enough to attend. So I don't believe this upcoming event will even be the first ever *classical* live concerrt in Second Life.
Valerie Bethune, Toronto,
Love the idea! Was just discussing online a few weeks ago the difficulty of delivering classical music to young audiences. Any outreach effort is worthwhile, and anything that happens in Second Life is just cool by virtue of its being there! Also, I have met some media talent out of Liverpool in SL, and he/she/they seem to be doing some very cool stuff! Couple this music initiative with Liverpool's efforts to establish it as a center for real-life film production, and I would have to argue the city is appearing most progressive! Good on Liverpool!

The other week I was invited by my friend Christy Odets [SL name] to listen to some French classical and acoustic guitarist in a public performance space on SL. Anyone with the right audio streaming software and access to a streaming server can play live music in SL and there are many parcels and whole sims devoted to live performance all over the grid.
Saying that I am all in favour of what RLP are doing in SL.
Now when do we get Rammstein playing live in SL?
Pol McLaglen, Bournemouth, UK
"...and even cough without incurring the displeasure of the conductor and fellow audience members"
Ah, well, now there's SL Voice available, so all coughs and throat-clearings can be virtually enjoyed by every resident. :)
Oh, and Suzanne Vega among others would be surprised to learn that this is the 'first' virtual concert. It sounds wonderful, but it's not the first.

Also not the first ever to do it! not to mention a horrible replica that can never be as good as the real thing.
Horrible press on this! not to mention miss information!
All for live music, In second life you can build just about anything! why make a crappy copy of something? they missed out on alot from doing that. if they plan to hold 100 avies... Good Luck! If the sim has any client / server side lag.. then when it is filled the whole thing will become a madhouse of bad lag!
From every standpoint this is a failure!
Why goto the bathroom in Second Life? makes no sense?
I could name off many different aspects as to why this is a failure but what is the point? what I have here should be enough :)
David S, San Jose,
It's hardly the "first ever live virtual concert" in Second Life - residents have been performing music in SL for years. I welcome the Philharmonic's move, but you shouldn't portray it as something it's not.
Ron Frost, Beijing, China
Wonderful!
How do I apply for a ticket?
