Just when you thought all the nominations were in, the awards had been handed out or were about to be, and the country’s musicians were smug and satisfied for another year, a new round of music award nods begin.
Tomorrow night The 02, in London, hosts the Q Awards nominations, with perennial favourites the Manic Street Preachers set to play alongside musicians of the moment Kate Nash, Cherry Ghost and Athlete.
Irish Doctor-turned-musician Eoghan Colgan, who won this year’s 02 Undiscovered talent search, will also take the stage, having recently thrown in his medical career to become a full-time singer-songwriter.
The nominations are to be a more democratic affair this year after organisers reduced the number of awards given by judges and opened up more categories to public vote. Q Magazine Editor Paul Rees predicts the public will pledge their support to Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Muse, Scissor Sisters, Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight.
Last year Oasis and U2 were the big winners, with the former taking home the Best Act in the World award and the latter taking home the Innovation in Sound prize as well as a one-off accolade for polling the most votes through the history of the awards.
The 2007 award ceremony will take place on October 8 at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
