Must-have reissue

JOY DIVISION: Closer (Warner) Joy Division are one of those bands whose legacy should perhaps be left as it is, but if they’re going to be repackaged, then this is a suitably simple and sensitive approach: the two studio albums and the rarities compilation, Still, each reissued with an extra disc featuring a notable live performance. They aren’t quite on the Velvet Underground’s level when it comes to the inverse ratio of sales to influence, but the fact that ULU (capacity about 800) was one of their bigger UK gigs is sobering. Isolation, Heart and Soul and Twenty Four Hours still sound ahead of their time, although – thanks to so many imitators – parts of Closer also sound strangely current. ME
