Simply Red is splitting up after a quarter of a century together, the band’s singer Mick Hucknall announced today.
Hucknall, 47, who founded the pop and soul group in 1984, said that 25 years was "long enough for anybody".
Ignoring the tradition of fiery big band break-downs, Simply Red is splitting in an organised and civil fashion. The group will go their separate ways following their 2009 tour.
Hucknull said the band would not be recording together again, making Stay, released earlier this year, their last album.
Simply Red made their name in 1985 with the single Money's Too Tight (to Mention), which reached number 13 on the UK music charts. They went on to sell more than 50 million albums, after garnering international praise for songs like Holding Back The Years, If You Don't Know Me By Now, Fairground, and Stars.
In recent years, the line-up has changed and the group's success has failed to match the highs reached in the Eighties and Nineties.
In an interview with Gold Radio, Hucknull said it was time to move on. "There will be an end to Simply Red. I've kind of decided that the 25 years is going to be enough, so I intend that the 2009 will be the last Simply Red tour."
"I've just recorded an album that is a tribute to Bobby Bland, a blues and R'n'B artist. It's a solo project and I've really enjoyed it so much that I feel the time has come now to just put a book-end to the story and the album Stay will be the last Simply Red studio album.
"The song The World And You Tonight (released last month) will be the last Simply Red single release.
"I feel good with that, I feel very comfortable with that," he said.
"It's not a very big deal but I can't change the music under the name of Simply Red and the second half of the Stay album has an edgier feel and I want to explore that side more.
"I want to be more influenced by R’n’B of the Sixties and try my slant on it, and try to invent a new form of music.
"It's a big challenge but I can't do it under the name of Simply Red."
"I just want to use my name from 2010 and try and explore something new that's got a bit more of an edge and a little more drive and I think that 25 years is long enough for anybody and I think it's worth celebrating in that sense."
Hucknall became a father for the first time this year when girlfriend Gabriella Wesberry gave birth to daughter Romy True in June. His relationship with Wesberry has ended the media attention that followed Hucknall when he dated model Helena Christensen, actresses Tracy Shaw, Martine McCutcheon and Catherine Zeta Jones.
The singer has often been accused of arrogance. He recently said: "I am one of the best singer-songwriters this country has produced. Ever.
"If people don't like me saying that, tough s***. You can't sell 50 million albums without something.
"Tom Jones told me only a few singers have got the pipes, and he's right. He has. Sinatra did. I have."
The interview, in which Hucknall announces Simply Red’s break-up, will be broadcast by Gold Radio on Saturday.

I just heard this terrible news for the 1st time.....i'm stunned. Mick, go solo for a while but please; never say never. I hope you get the 7 year itch big time and come back to keep singing us those great songs for years to come like Frank and Tom. In any event, i won't miss an 09 tour date for the world; would appreciate some So. california stops, arthur

Mick is an international treasure - we'll take him under whatever name he wants. Those who criticize are tone-deaf cretins with no comprehension of music.

Simply the Best.
I have seen them three times, so far, and will make damn sure I see them again before they say goodbye. Their original songs are wonderful, their covers sublime and "Holding Back the Years" done on stage simply makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
Deb, Leicester, UK
Certainly the best band I have seen live, professional to the end.Simply Red have produced some great work and I am a continued supporter.Mick has earnt the right to be outspoken,he is a genious without doubt.I wish Mick and the guy,s every success in their future ventures.

I don't know how people can call Simply red and the genius that Mick Hucknall is. I have been a huge fan since they first hit the uk charts and if they are so bad then wht do all their Arena tours sell out so quick???????

People are welcome to their views, but whatever they say, this group has brought great pleasure to many many people and as has been said, sound even better live than their recorded tracks. Despite what people who've never seen them may think, Mick does not hide the band, they are always part of the band. If you don't like Mick and Simply Red - Fine - that's your view.
Gerald (Italiastar), london,
Thank heavens for that. I have loathed this wretched band and their music for a quarter of a century. The quicker they exit the arena never to return, the better. Goodbye, Simply Red. GOOD BYE!

I think he should go into acting. He would make a wicked Elephant Man,
, hardly any makeup would be required!!

I thougth Mick Hucknall was Simply Red. How can he split up with himself? Or maybe one head has had enough of the other one and wants to have a solo career.
Mike, UK,
Pardon my cynicism but it all sounds rather contrived. As far back as 1991 Mick Hucknall said that Simply Red was "essentially a solo project" - a very fair comment as rarely have band members been so invisible behind a lead singer. Quite how you then manage to split yourself up is difficult to understand (although definitely worth watching) .
David Tee, Tokyo,
Every time Simply Red is on the radio Mick Hucknell's name is mentioned yet I've never heard any other of the group members names mentioned. Even after twenty five years; is this a record?
Steve Morris
Steve Morris, Gloucester,
I cant' believe the negative and nasty comments i have read about Mick today. Those responsible should keep their opinions to themselves as i am sure that some of the music that they like, will be crap according to others. Mick and his band members are all excellent and i for one am sad about the split but will be looking forward to seeing what Mick has to offer in the future.
melanie, Morden,
The only news here is the surprising fact that Simply Red didn't break up 20 years ago.
Greg Autry, New Bedford, USA
good riddance!
a scouser, liverpool,
Dave, you're absolutely right! How can a man spit himself? 25 years is not nearly enough. I mean, who's gonna say it's enough to such a band like Simply Red? Mick please if you read this, don't split yourself, we need Simply Red songs!
Ivan, Ohrid, Macedonia
As long-standing fans of Simply Red, this is a sad but perhaps inevitable day. As Mick Hucknall and Simply Red are still amongst the best live acts in the Country (our No1) maybe this is premature for those of us who have grown up with the band. They were brilliant in the Royal Albert Hall & Regents Park this year and we look forward to ever more heights next week in Malta.
If some think Mick boastful about his prowess, perhaps if they saw him live they would appreciate his point. (You Make me Feel Brand New, live has no rock/pop vocal parallel). How many bands produce a better sound live, than via the studio?
We will 'Simply' have to make the most of the next 2 years.
Thank you Mick, and the band for 'Holding Back our Years'.
Neil & Sue, Bromley, Kent
How can Mick split from himself? Simply Red ceased to be a band a long time ago. These days its just Mick and a bunch of session musicians.
Dave, London,
As long-standing fans of Charlie Drake, this is a sad but perhaps inevitable day. As Charlie is still amongst the best live acts in the Country (our No1) maybe this is premature for those of us who have grown up with the tubby, sweating comedian. He was brilliant in the Royal Albert Hall & Regents Park this year and we look forward to ever more heights next week in Malta.
If some think Charlie boastful about his prowess, perhaps if they saw him live they would appreciate his point. (My Boomerang won't come back, live has no rock/pop vocal parallel). How many ageing sweaty lotharios produce a better sound live, than via the studio?
We will 'Simply' have to make the most of the next 2 years.
Thank you Charlie for saying 'Hello my darlings'.
