With a lederhosen-clad Snoop Dogg, a relatively sober Pete Doherty and a performance from Amy Winehouse, it was a colourful night at the MTV Europe awards in Munich last night.
Their much-hyped duet did not eventuate, but Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty still managed to make their mark on the awards, which were dominated by Canadian pop singer Avril Lavigne.
Lavigne pipped the most-nominated Justin Timberlake to the top honour of Best Solo Artist, and also won a gong for Most Addictive Track for her hit song Girlfriend.
But it was Winehouse and Doherty who captivated the crowd with their performances. Winehouse took to the stage to perform her song Back To Black, while Doherty performed new track Deliverance with his band Babyshambles.
Winehouse, who was arrested for possession of cannibis in Norway last month, was a last-minute addition to the bill and represented a coup for the organisers - in September she cancelled an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas while she received treatment following a reported drug overdose.
When the 24-year-old, dressed in a denim mini-dress, was announced as the winner of the peer-voted Artists’ Choice award, she took to the podium looking confused.
After being handed her award by REM singer Michael Stipe, Winehouse, who had apparently been enjoying White Russian cocktails, mumbled “thanks” then wandered off, leaving the audience bemused.
The last few months have seen her admitted to hospital for a drug-induced seizure, in a rehabilitation clinic and involved in several public bust-ups with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil.
Earlier Doherty, recently out of rehab, showed off his anti-heroin implant and said while he and Winehouse did not make it onstage together last night, they will soon.
“We’re not doing anything tonight but we will be doing something in the future,” he said.
Doherty, who was praised for his professional behaviour by awards organisers, said he was “in hibernation” and trying to stay out of trouble after a judge handed him a suspended jail sentence on Monday for a string of drug and motoring offences.
The ceremony was held at Munich’s Olympiahalle and broadcast to a potential worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
