The troubled singer Amy Winehouse finally has something to look forward to after receiving six Grammy nominations this afternoon.
Winehouse, who has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, received the second-highest number of nominations for the highly regarded US music awards, behind the American rapper Kanye West.
Winehouse, 24, was nominated in all four of the top categories: record and song of the year for her hit Rehab, album of the year for Back to Black, and best new artist.
Other top nominees included Sir Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Rihanna, T-Pain and Timbaland.
The awards, considered the music industry’s top honours, will be announced during ceremonies in Los Angeles on February 10.
Record of the year candidates included Beyonce’s Irreplaceable, the Foo Fighters’ The Pretender, Rihanna’s Umbrella, What Goes Around Comes Around; by Justin Timberlake and Winehouse’s Rehab.
Besides Winehouse’s Rehab, other song of the year candidates included British pop singer Corrine Bailey Rae’s sweet-sounding Like A Star, Carrie Underwood’s revenge anthem Before He Cheats, The Plain White T’s Hey There Delilah; and Umbrella.
The album of the year category also featured the Foo Fighters, for Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, as well as Winehouse’s album.
While her popularity has soared since the release of her critically acclaimed album Back to Black, Winehouse, who has admitted to drug and alcohol, self-harm and eating problems, has been on a downward spiral over the past twelve months.
The singer‘s troubles have included a drug overdose in August and an arrest for drug possession in Norway in October.
Last month her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, 25, was arrested and remanded in Pentonville prison awaiting trial on charges of assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice. This prompted Winehouse to cancel her sell-out European tour after a shambolic series of concerts.
Yesterday, she was reported to be receiving professional help.
Her spokesman said: “After cancelling the remaining dates of her UK tour, due to physical and emotional strain, Amy Winehouse has been under the care of physicians. Amy and her family ask that her privacy is respected during this difficulttime.”
