Simon Cowell has tightened his stranglehold on the British music industry by securing a third successive Christmas number one for the winner of X Factor, his ITV karaoke contest.
Leon Jackson, an 18-year-old shop assistant from West Lothian, was this series’ winner. His debut single When You Believe becomes the fastest selling single of the year with 275,000 sales - more than the rest of the top ten combined.
“I’m absolutely over the moon. It’s the best Christmas and birthday present ever,” he said. “Having the Christmas number one is an amazing ending to an amazing year and I’m overwhelmed and thrilled.”
Dannii Minogue, the teenager’s mentor on the television programme, added: “It’s amazing.”
Cowell, a millionaire pop music producer, gives a record deal to the winner of each series of X Factor. That accolade appears to ensure that their first single goes straight into the charts at number one, but Jackson has sold far fewer copies than his predecessors.
Shayne Ward sold 742,000 copies of his debut to earn the festive top spot two years ago, Leona Lewis, the 2006 X Factor winner, managed 571,000.
Alan Jones, a chart consultant with the industry magazine Music Week, said: “The charts do tend to be cyclical and you get runs of things. Every Christmas number one of the 21st century has been either a novelty, reality or charity single.
“Even though it’s the third Christmas in a row we’ve had an X Factor winner at number one, the last two singles have done rather less well than Shayne Ward.”
Jackson was a surprise winner with Rhydian Roberts, a Welsh operatic singer, the favourite to win the public vote.
Previous X Factor winner Lewis is placed third in the Christmas chart with Bleeding Love, one position below a 'duet' between Katie Melua and the late Eva Cassidy.
The old Pogues and Kirsty MacColl hit, Fairytale Of New York, completed the top four after BBC Radio One offered the single a publicity boost. The station decided to remove the word “faggot” from the well-known chorus because it was felt it might cause offence to some, before admitting they had made a mistake and reinstating it.

its not really that fair because itunes, probably the biggest market for digital sales, weren't selling his single. it was an error and i think it hurt his sales a lot

Leon was by far the best winner ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rydian & his supporters are just really bad looers!!!!!!!!!! GO LEON!!!!!!!
Selwin, Cardigan, Wales
It's all very well comparing single sales compared to previous years, but all single sales are down. So it's not a fair comparison.
Tony, London,
Its almost irrelevant who was the best, or even who the public liked best, as I tried 6 times before I was able to get my vote in for rhydian. It kept giving the message 'lines are busy call back'......The voting result cannot possibly be reliable.

Leon has a lovely voice and deserved to win. He has many devoted fans in England as well as Scotland.
Deborah, Surrey, London, England
I do agree that Leon can't sing. He was very week throughout the series. He can only ATTEMPT to sing swing.
Alberto, London, England
this vote was a fix
Carly, scotland, glasgow
Leon is great and thanks to all our English friends who voted for the best talent. Rhydian only sings opera and the Welsh are bad losers.... Scotland and England have to be united and support Leon in his victory.....
Elaine FROM SCOTLAND
ELAINE DUNCAN, glasgow,
Yinka,
Got some news for you.
It's impossible to win the xfactor without major support from 'bleeding englund". Voters in Scotland, Wales and Ireland have no influence in reality.
Yes they all add up, but do the math. This is England's fault.
Merry Xmas.
Leon, west lothain,
Leon is nowhere near as good as the previous X Factor winners, he cant even sing his own single in tune!!
LeonHater, NOT SCOTLAND,
Yinka, Leicester he cant sing you cant spell
and people can only survive if they have
someone to hate
may you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS

Nothing wrong with this if people are prepared to line Simon Cowell's lets make an easy buck pockets!
He doesn't care if they last five minutes or five years just as long as they make him money!
Thing that worries me is if this format is hurting real music talent, if any of these kids are that good they will make it anyway and if not they shouldn't be there as a money making machine for the likes of Simon Cowell.
The x factor sends out the wrong message in my opinion, that to have great voice isn't enough, you have to be good looking too which is such rubbish!
I hope Simon Cowell has a great christmas counting his millions and these kids are still around this time next year!
Jason Turner, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire
This guy can't sing and it's obvious in the single sales. I'm not surprised he sond far more fewer than shayne Ward and Leona Lewis. This is just another Gareth Gates and I'm so angry that he won. He doesn't deserve it at all and only won cuz the whole of bleeding Scotland voted for him. his career won't go past next year
Yinka, Leicester,
his cover of when you believe is boring to be honest. but look at leona lewis, she made her cover of a moment like this so lovely. i think leon is not a talented as shayne ward and leona lewis, obviously.
crisanna, kl, msia
leon you are my hero and i think you are great i have bought tickets to come and see you i cryed my eyes out when i heard u name being called by dermet and i just want you to know i love your song and rydian is nothing compared to you! and can't wait to come and see you i have your song on my laptop phone and ipod and u will go very far i love you leon xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
kerri, ayr, scotland
Hi I'm a dj of 30 years, this song offfers nothing new and this singer will drift to oblivion sooner rather than later. Nothing new here, drab looking, Gareth Gates the second
gary neale, coventry, england
Leon is overrated, only people in Scotland voted for him.
Johnny
Paisley
Johnny, Paisley,
Great news about Leon's song! I have to say I don't rate it as much as others of his performances during the show. But the distance he is behind Leona's sales and especially behind Shayne Ward is pretty revealing. Although I really enjoyed X-factor this year, I can't face another long drawn-out one next year. Even though the X Factor drew 12 million viewers this year, it might be time for Cowell and co. to move on.
David Wilding, London, England
you are so good at sing leon
bobo, shoramham, kingsland close
Hello ,
just here to say that iot does not matter how many cd's e selt but he is loved more than shayne ward or leona lewis ..
Hope Smalley, Livingston, Scotland
And this is why I pay no attention to the charts anymore.
No talent required.
