The Arctic Monkeys swaggered into poll position for the NME music awards today after receiving a record seven nominations.
The Sheffield band, who came to prominence with the fastest selling debut album in history, are nominated for Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album and Album Artwork, Best Track for Fluorescent Adolescent and Best Video for Teddy Picker, while Alex Turner, the lead singer, is a Best Dressed contender.
Last year, the group were lauded for a string of searing live performances promoting their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare, and have now been nominated 15 times by the NME, making them the magazine’s most favoured band of the decade.
Amy Winehouse, who entered rehab last week, will be less pleased with her four nominations. She is on the shortlist for the Worst Dressed performer and will also compete with President Bush, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for the title of Villain of the Year.
The Arctic Monkey’s main challenge, when the awards are announced on February 28, will come from the Klaxons, who received four nominations including Best Band, Best Album, Best Video and Best Dancefloor Filler.
Their debut album, Myths of the Near Future, has already beaten the Arctic Monkey’s album to the prestigious and lucrative Mercury Music Prize.
Faded Britpop heroes Oasis made a return to the nominations list getting the nod for Lord Don’t Slow Me Down in the Best Track and Best Music DVD categories.
My Chemical Romance were nominated for four awards but failed to make the shortlist for Best Album. Radiohead were nominated for In Rainbows, which they allowed fans to download from their website for whatever price they saw fit.
Radiohead were joined by the Enemy, Babyshambles and Klaxons in the battle to prevent the Arctic Monkeys from seizing the Best Album gong.

This does say a lot for the NME and modern 'alternative' music: bland, totally and utterly bland.
nick, brighton,
I think 7 nominations for Arctic Monkeys says more about NME than it does about Arctic Monkeys. And the award for laziest, most redundant music rag goes to...
Gabriel Casey, Belfast,
Amy W is a huge talent and l'd like to know why Pete D/ Babyshambles is cool for getting high and falling apart and Amy is blasted for similar stuff. Is this just good old fashioned sexism? The Arctic Monkeys are ok but really 7 nominations for a band which is mostly hype, The NME awards used to mean something but now all credibility is gone. Let's hope next years nominations are more interesting.
Diana Nichols, Gainsborough, UK
Sometimes the worst dressed are actually showstoppers - how come amy w is being lauded by Karl L. I think it is a case of kicking people when they are down. As for the polls - just get a bunch of hackers in one room and they could swing it for anyone - look at the Eurovision.....
