The much-hyped London musician Adele has lived up to predictions and entered the UK’s album chart at No.1.
The Brit School graduate’s soulful debut album, 19, pushed Scouting For Girls from the top spot yesterday, while her single Chasing Pavements remained at No.2 on the singles chart. Another track from the album, Hometown Glory, entered the singles chart at No. 32.
Regularly referred to as “the new Amy Winehouse”, Adele has been saddled with high expectations since late last year when critics began picking that she was the one-to-watch in 2008.
The singer-songwriter, who doesn’t use her last name, Adkins, has already been crowned “sound of 2008” by a BBC tastemakers' poll and later this month will be presented with The Critics Choice prize at The Brit Awards.
Adele’s triumph pushed Scouting For Girls’ self-titled release into No. 2 position yesterday, while Nickelback’s album All The Right Reasons rose from No 10. to No 3.
On the singles chart, Now You’re Gone by Basshunter featuring DJ Mental Theo, remained in the top spot for the fourth week running. The Eurodance song was produced in a bedroom by Swedish DJ/producer Jonas Altberg.
The unlikely hit ended former X Factor winner Leon Jackson’s three-week run at the top of the charts last month and has hung onto the No. 1 spot since.
The Nickelback track Rockstar remained at No. 3.
American pop singer Britney Spears’ musical success continued despite her hospital admission last week for mental health issues.
Her song Piece of Me, which takes aim at the paparazzi pack that follows her, sits at No. 7, while another track Gimme More is at No. 44.
Her album Blackout, released in November 2007, is at No. 20.
