2 for 1 tickets to Casablanca, this coming Monday
Dark days for those of us who are too unfashionable to have embraced the iPod and like nothing better than the sound of white men thrashing away at guitars. Planet Rock, “the UK’s home of classic rock”, is climbing the stairway to heaven. GCap, Britain’s largest commercial radio group, says it sees little future in Digital Audio Broadcasting and is closing the station.
I discovered Planet Rock as I was playing around with my Roberts personal DAB radio. Soon I needed a daily fix of Led Zep, AC/DC and Neil Young as I walked to and from work. Some of the presenters are cheesy, others crass, with terrible, smutty jokes.
The ears are assailed with lines such as: “If music be the food of love, stand by for a good rogering.” One tasteful promotion claimed that if Kurt Cobain had owned a Planet Rock anorak he wouldn’t have blown his brains out. But – terrible confession, this – I find a blast of Guns N’Roses clears the mind wonderfully after a long day. It’s only rock’n’roll (but I like it).
Of course, the problem is that the sound regularly cuts out – especially if you are in a built-up area, when the transmission will frequently sound as if it is coming from the bottom of a swimming pool. This has contributed to the disappointing take-up of digital radio and its uncertain future.
This is a shame for those of us who relish the variety on offer on digital stations. You can catch a match on 5 Live Sports Extra or some obscure folk tunes on 6 Music. The other day I came across Birdsong, which broadcasts the soothing sounds recorded in a Wiltshire garden for 18 hours a day.
At Planet Rock they hope that the station may still be bought. Perhaps one of the ageing rockers who received regular airings on the station will step in.
But let’s prepare for the worst. As AC/DC almost said, for those about to rock for not much longer (we salute you).

I came to Planet Rock after theJazz and Oneword bit the dust - it has revived my interest in the music - so far I have bought - yes, actually purchased - dozens of CDs - some new, some to update my ageing collection. Are we dumbing down the digital radio - no wonder their isn't much take up.
Annie, Kettering,
Planet rock is the main station on DAB I listen to whilst driving my truck at work as it has great music and good mobile reception. It fills a demand for rock music 24/7. Dont switch it off!
dave, sheffield, uk
PR has to survive without it what's the point!
Stu Hibbard, Holfirth,
If GCap can't find a buyer why not sell it for a smaller amount! If it's going to closedown anyway they might as well get something for it rather than nothing at all. Conversely why not put it on FM and Freeview and reach a wider audience even if the y only apply for a short term licence for these two outlets just to advertise what they have with a view to returning exclusively to digital after 12 months.
Malcolm, Alvechurch/Nr. Birmnigham, UK/Worcestershire
Will Gcap please reimburse all the money i have spent on dab radios for the home and car, because without Planet Rock i will not be using them any longer.
Tony Brown, leeds, yorkshire
Only one week of planet rock to go and still no news of a reprieve. I suggest a boycott of ALL Gcap stations, and while we're at it products that are are advertised. The station is being shut as they say its not commercially viable, so why give them any of our money at all.
Ian Winterbottom, Oldham,
If the signal is bad where you live, buy a new radio! I live in a built up area, right next to a huge shopping centre and tower blocks and my DAB signal is better than FM! Hence why I bought a DAB radio, just before the news about Planet Rock, I'm gutted. I've heard that Brian May and David Gilmour have expressed their views on this travesty, surely they could club together and buy Planet Rock along with Alice Cooper and Rick Wakeman? Only down side to that would be maybe Rick's jokes will get even worse, if that's possible ;-P
cathy, London,
if planet rock had the right advertising loads of old rockers would by a dab just for this station.i never saw an advert for pr and only found out about it after i got a dab .it would be nice if all the big bands who are played on pr would chip in and start a fund that listeners could contribute to .they would benifit from increased sales [i've purchased loads more rock music since hearing bands on pr,most of it i wouldn't have cos i never knew it exsisted
k dinsdale, birmingham,
It's OK for the Beeb to DABble in digital radio at our compulsary expense they don't have nearly as many listeners as Planet Rock on their 6radio but dont have to face commercial realities. Man of PR's listeners are like me middle aged and well off I buy cars, computers, an HD telly, I go on holiday. Target the advertising and you will find me. I'm not alone there are many well off men and women out there and we listen to rock music. Just look at how enduring these great musicians are and many of them are clever, very clever they are still at the top of their proffesion decades after they started. Rock on, that's enough ranting.
Steve Brown, Bracknell, UK
I also only bought my radio to listen to planet rock at uni. There are problems with the portable ones cutting out as you move about, but if you have a normal one, there is always somewhere in the room you can pick it up! (I even found planet rock in Leeds, where it isn't supposed to be available...)
Planet Rock is the only radio station I really listen to (apart from the odd outing to radio 4) and I will be really annoyed if it does end up closing. i'll miss my daily fix of good music!
Alan Weir, Otl,
I love planet Roack - and I love Birdsong too. The DAB market was created to treat the more diverse radio markets more fairly and there should be an obligation on the big providers to provide 'niche' services.
Andrew Hoop, London, UK
I hope someone finds a way to keep the station going.
It's the only station on the radio or TV that's worth it's salt!
and I'm not an ageing has been.
I'm a 28 year old web designer Planet Rock embraces all
Peter Watson, Ormskirk, Lancashire
I'm 15 years old and live near the centre of bath. All I listen to is Planet Rock, it's my lifeline keeps me going whatever i'm doing and means i don't have to rely on the collection i have on CD. Planet Rock means I get a variation of music and hear some stuff i don't have in my house. A good upside is theres no modern crap polluting the air in my room!
Alex, Bath,
The Idea of DAB was to meet the diverse needs of the listening public, however because of lack of investment by the BBC, Top 40 FM rules! All the commercial FM stations are top 40 clones, Radio's 1, 2 and 6 music All revolve around the top 40, Planet Rock, and The Jazz broke the mold. Gcap are busy gluing it back together by closing down their DAB platform.
I believe one of the reasons is the lack of availability of BBC national radio on DAB. Because of this we are may now be sentenced to lifelong FAB FM.
Rob Steel, Nottingham, Notts
early 70s 80s, Planet Rock plays it all, i dont need to play any Albums or cds , cos PLANET ROCK plays the lot
come on rick, alice and tony, all chip in and buy this fantastic stationPLAESE
DAVE WESTROP, MORECAMBE, UK
I only bought a digital radio so I could get Planet Rock and listen to Alice Cooper. The selection of music on the show is simply awe inspiring.
My husband is a fan now as well!

The only reason to buy digital radio, Mine may be for sale shortly!
greg Roberts, Doncaster, south yorkshire
please somebody save planet rock.its one of the few stations worth listening to.as a teenager in the eighties its the kind of station i dreamed of.now its here i cant imagine a radio without it.
robin, northampton,
I listen to Planet Rock on average 12 hours a day . . .
. . I have 2 DAB's both with presets but each has only 1 programmed !!
Please . . . Save the Planet !!
Faith Healer, St Albans, Herts
Its the end of the world as we know it,A radio Station playing real music and satifiying a need for all us fifty somethings.
I can only hope someone out there with the same needs can come up with a rescue package.Long live Rock and Roll.
Stephen Kay, St. Helens, Lancashire
i.m going to be very annoyed if planet rock fails to be commercial enough to survive. Will some rich rich entrepenuer not rescue it? Come on mr Branstone, get your wadd out and save a million souls from destruction.Oh, and by the way¬ don't mess around with the format OK ?
john york, frome, england
I agree "Save Planet Rock."
By the time today's quadrophenia finished it was past 4.30 pm and not one ad break. That in itself tells me why they are no longer interested in niche radio: not enough time to pay the rent with mind numbing ads.
Won't somebody save me from Steve Wright, Ken Bruce et al?
Paul Stott, Rochdale, Lancs
OK, so if they're going to kill it, would GCap sell Planet Rock to me for £1? I can't really afford that but, if they let me have it, I reckon that it could make money. Lots of people I know listen to it and most of them are in the 35-55 age group, which must be good for advertising.
I reckon that Planet Rock and The Jazz should continue to broadcast, and I say that as someone who loathes jazz. There is a market for both these stations but the transmission quality is not good enough. Recently 2 or 3 other stations closed on Digital One and there's some vacant space. Rather than get other new stations to fill the space, increase the bit rate to 192kbps or, even better, to 224kbps on these two stations, plus Virgin and Classic FM. The quality of transmission would then equal or better that of FM stereo.
I like Planet Rock and Alice Cooper has just about the only decent breakfast show on the radio. All the others, including Radio 4's serious Today Programme, make me cringe.
Charles Stuart, Trowbridge,
I listen to Planet Rock loads. I even have a "soundasleep pillow" and go to sleep listening to it. How many radio stations would play a AC/DC, Guns n Roses, Motorhead Etc track in its entireity and not fade it out at the guitar solo? The request show on a saturday and sunday morning is brill! Alot of the music PR play I have got on vynal but tucked away under the stairs. But PR can jog my memory all day. I would pay to listen to Planet Rock! 500000 listeners paying a £1 a year would keep it going, wouldn't it?
Jed Price, Chester, England
Not just Planet Rock biting the dust, but theJazz too - it will be missed by the almost half a million listeners it had attracted. There is no alternative .
PW, London,
Save Planet Rock
It's the only station worth listening to.
I ditched listening to Radio when it told me what I should be listening to.
Soon as I discovered Planet Rock , and three new DAB radios later- its on 24/7- ( 4th In Car Pure - now on hold)
Whoevers in charge of G Cap needs to now that Blokes need Rock ( and Dave) and the Blokes who listen do have money for the advertisers to get hold of (Which bloke would not have sold their grandmar for Led Zep tickets. If G Cap are not capable of tapping into this then please ensure PR is sold to an owner who can.
DAB is dead without you.
Paul Turner, YORK, North Yorkshire
