Arctic Monkey's frontman, Alex Turner, has finally christened his new side project. The highly-anticipated collaboration with Miles Kane, of Wirral-based band the Rascals, is to be called the very un-simian like, The Last Shadow Puppets.
Displaying a taste for the grandiose, the pair have revealed that their debut album is to be called The Age Of The Understatement and will be released this spring.
A grainy short film featured on the band's new website, www.theageoftheunderstatement.com , is soundtracked by a teaser from the upcoming album. A sinister orchestral theme with sawing strings, it backs up the pair’s hints that people will be surprised by the band's sound. They have both mentioned Scott Walker and David Axelrod as key influences on the project.
Recorded over two weeks at the Black Box studios in Nantes (which would explain Miles Kane's stripy Breton sweater in the video), it was produced by drummer and producer-du-jour, James Ford. The Arcade Fire's Owen Pallet orchestrated the 12 tracks, which were recorded by the London Metropolitan Orchestra over Christmas.
Their label, Domino, had this to say:
" The Age Of The Understatement is an album of 12 full-blooded songs, bold and brassy, full of drama, wit and melody, that source the past but avoid the minefields of pastiche.
“Both Miles and Alex are 22 and this is a youthful engagement, full of life and the sheer pleasure of music making.”
The title track will be released as their first single on April 14.
