The blind Canadian rock and blues musician Jeff Healey has died of cancer on the eve of a new album release.
The famous guitarist, who played with his instrument flat on his lap, died of cancer in a Toronto hospital on Sunday, a spokesperson said.
The 41-year-old was diagnosed with a rare cancer, retino balstoma, at birth, and the disease claimed his eyesight when he was aged 1.
Last year, Healey had surgery to remove cancerous tissue from his legs and later from both lungs. He also underwent courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy but the cancer continued to spread.
Healey began playing the guitar when he was 3, formed his first band at 17, and rose to fame with The Jeff Healey Band in 1988, when they released the hit single Angel Eyes and the Grammy-nominated album See the Light. The record sold more than one million copies in America.
He won a Juno award for Entertainer of the Year in 1990 and went on to play with some of the biggest names in blues, including B.B King and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He also recorded with George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, and the late Jimmy Rogers
But an array of original rock albums, live and ‘best of’ albums that he released during the Nineties failed to sell as well as See the Light and he returned to recording jazz.
Before he died, he had completed his first rock-blues album, Mess of Blues, in eight years and was planning a tour of Britain and Germany. He was also scheduled to appear on Later with Jools Holland.
A spokesperson confirmed that the album release would go ahead, coming out in America in March, and in Europe in April.
He leaves his wife, Cristie, daughter Rachel, 13 and son Derek, 3.

What an inspiration this man was. To play with such emotion and unbelievable skill and feeling. God rest his gentle soul and may his family learn to move forwards from this terribly sad ending. A true hero amongst heroes this guy took the world on despite having lost his sight. To many there is a dispute as to who is the best guitar player,Jeff Healey was awesome. He became well respected and his version of "While my guitar gently weeps" is very good. I did think he could have joined "The traveling Wilbury's" and made a good go of it! Sadly his family are left without their loved one. We as music fans can at least enjoy his music and skill. His death is a real loss, and any music fan will tell you he rocked!
We will probably not see anyone with his ability for a very long time,
MARK MARTEN, READING,BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND

A tragic loss for everyone - especially Jeff's family. For us fans and players he will remain forever through his music. My message to his wife an children is this.

A great loss.
Jeff was unique in many ways - like all legendary musicians.
He is one of the greatest blues singers/players. I saw him in Belfast in "Limelight" club and he blowed us away with his powerful songs. It was one of the best concerts ever.
He will be sadly missed.
My sympathy goes to his wife and children.
His music will never die.

I'm 17 years old. I first listen to Jeff Healey when guy at work handed me his very best of cd. I was amazed and inspired. I even learnt Don't Let Your Chance by ear because i loved it so much. I was really excited when i read that he'd be playing a concert here, and like many others, i would have travel a great distance to see this incredible guy. I was gutted when i heard that he had left us. Jeff Healey opened my eyes to other music than just metal. Thank You Jeff, eternally. My feelings for his family.

He was unique and awesome talent. He will be missed. I'm sorry for his family's loss. He will always have a revered place in my music collection.
Tim Grant, West Des Moines, Iowa USA
I remember meeting Jeff Healey and his entourage on an eastbound streetcar in Toronto in the mid-eighties: the man himself, a blues brother who played harp and a girlfriend. He ended up at his friend's place, a chap who played harp and had a staggering number of 78s. All of this was before the fame, but it was still good fun. I didn't know I was brushing with the famous and famous.
terry, Toronto, Canada
You were an inspiration to all Guitarists and Musicians all over the world. There was nobody like you and I don't think there ever will be again in my lifetime. I loved to listen to you play and you made it sound so easy and natural. I will miss you.
Only the Good Die Young.

Sad, Sad news to hear. Jeff Healey was a great musician and will sadly be missed. His music touched me deeply. My prayers to him and his family. He is with God now and is at peace with his angels.
Erasmo Pagan, Chula Vista, California
I first found Jeff while watching the film Roadhouse and was hooked straight away.
In the next few months I managed to collect most of his recordings and l played them to anyone who would listen.
Unfortunatley although hewas high on my list of people to see live, I never managed to.
A great man has left a hole in a lot of peoples hearts.
Jeff you have gone full circle. Rest in peace with the angels. God Bless
Vanessa, Kent, UK
Very, very sad to hear this news.
I discovered Jeff's music in the same year as Stevie Ray Vaughan's ('89). Now both of them have gone. So sad. (Thank goodness we've still got Joe Bonamassa!)
Will, Gloucester, England
We were honoured to have seen Jeff and his band play a number of times in London, Birmingham and Wolverhampton. The man was stupendous and totally professional. There are not enough young blues men about, Jeff, Joe and Tom as a band seemed to enjoy every moment. Our sympathies to his wife and children and the guys in the band.He will be sadly missed. Thanks Jeff xx
Susan & Roger Brettle, Alveley, Shropshire, UK
We were all shocked and stunned to hear of Jeffs untimely and extremely premature death.
I count myself very lucky to have seen him play live last year in Nottingham, where he just took the roof off the place.
A great loss to music - my band will play Confidence Man on Thursday night dedicated to Jeff.
Mike Lond, Grimsby, England

I'm absolutely gutted to hear the news of the passing of Jeff Healey. I've been a massive fan since `88. I saw him live on a couple of occasions and he was truly an awesome guitarist. I finally got to speak to him after one of the shows and all I can say is he was completely genuine; great sense of humour and very friendly as well as a hugely talented musician. Great guy, sadly missed by many. Such a shame he won't be Later with Jools Holland - that would really have been something to see. God bless you Jeff.
Stuart, Thundersley, Essex, UK
Totally stunning... it's a sad day for music. Jeff was a truly inspiring musician. He could make his guitar talk in a way many sighted musicians would envy. I know many of the top rock guitar greats respected his outstanding talent. God bless you Jeff.

Graeme, Bath, Somerset
That's really upsetting news. I saw Jeff in 1989 when I was a Student and was awestruck by the guy.
What a loss to Music and at such a young age.
Respects to his family
FerrariStu, Huddersfield,
This is very sad news. I saw Jeff in concert in London in 2007. He had the house rocking as he always did.
Seldom do you hear a guitarist that can even come close to his level. He was quite simply the best blues man of my generation.
Graham Hawkins, Sheppey, Kent
What a sad sad loss for those who enjoy hearing the guitar. Such amazing skill and grace, who's stage performances with The Jeff Healey Band were truly electric. What energy " not bad for a blind boy" was a true understatement (P.S. "Roadhouse").
In Glasgow the warm-up band had cancelled, their were not required.
He played his guitar sat down with it laid on his lap, standing up barely holding on to it, behind his head jumping up and down bumping into the bassist. Who kept Jeff from falling off the stage, the audience went mad.
If you have a guitar or know someone who does go out and buy his music and listen and listen to Jeff Healey.
Jools please give him a huge acknowledgement, it is such a sad loss.
While my guitar gentle weeps.
Simon Maclennan, Bremen, Germany
I'm touched to see the article about Jeff Healy across the ocean in the Sunday Times. It means a lot to know that he was recognized throughout the world.
Brenda Warburton, Toronto, Canada
Tragic news. Healey was an incredible talent - doubly so, given his extremely unorthodox playing style. A sad loss.
Steve Payne, Leicester,
