TRACK OF THE DAY: If the News Makes You Sad, Don't Watch It
WHO: Broken Records. Not to be confused with the now-defunct alternative Christian rock label of the same name (oh come on, weren't we all thinking that?), this is a hotly tipped Edinburgh six-piece who like to kick it old school, kinda.
WHAT: Celtic traditionalists whose power folk benefits from an overly enthusiastic attitude to orchestration.
THE HYPE: 'Magical, engrossing and wholly enveloping' Drowned in Sound
WE SAY: Say the Arcade Fire tour bus broke down in middle England a hundred or so years ago, there were no plugs for amps, nor amps for that matter, and they had to entertain the rowdy natives using anything that came to hand. This is how they'd sound.
Starting off like Rough Trade-era Fall, all angry bass riffs and primal drums, If The News Makes You Sad swells into a rousing string and brass-led opus, and with singer Jamie Sutherland's plaintive tones picking away at the heart strings, it's like The Killers literally getting medieval on yo ass.
IF I ONLY KNOW ONE THING: Their healthy buzz is in no way harmed by their value-for-money live shows which have seen up to 15 members on stage at one time in a full-on glockenspiel, mandolin, violin frenzy.
WHERE CAN I GET IT: 7" available now on Young Turks from RoughTrade shops.
