TRACK OF THE DAY: Shadows
WHO: Midnight Juggernauts aka Aussies Vincent Vendetta, Andy Juggernaut and Daniel Stricker – mysterious beat combo and remixers par excellence who could easily gain employment as Justice’s stunt doubles.
WHAT: Imagine Daft Punk taking Bowie to Studio 54 then back to their place to check out their Goblin and John Carpenter collection.
THE HYPE: ‘The perfect bridge between Bloc Party’s indie elegies and a synapse-shredding Justice DJ set' – NME
WE SAY: It’s not exaaaactly new – this has been kicking about since 2006 – but Shadows has finally been given a much-deserved official release. Adored by the aforementioned Justice boys, this is some serious party kit.
Starting with a feedback and drumstick count-in rock intro, like it’s gonna kick out the jams at Knebworth, it then confidently throws itself into an indie-disco workout, adding glistening arpeggio synth sweeps over a nagging funk bass that would prove resistant to any antibiotic. While the breathy China Girl-esque breathy verses feel like fag breaks, it merely highlights the chorus drop, one that could make a wet Monday in Tilbury docks feel like a minute past midnight on New Year’s Eve.
That should be enough really, but there’s more. The forthcoming album Dystopia fleshes out their portfolio, pushing into more atmospheric territory, strapping on the voguish downbeat vibes of Moroder and Can.
Even that isn’t it. Their remixes show a canny, populist ear for revealing untapped strengths – their version of Dragonette’s I Get Around takes what was an over-worked, try-hard piece of electro pop and makes it a slick construct of prism rhythms and uplifting major-key adorableness that Annie would be proud of.
Hopefully, they lose out elsewhere - like having erection problems or suchlike. Nobody should have it all their own way.
IF I ONLY KNOW ONE THING: In an inspired bid to raise their profile, the band once staged a fake Michael Jackson benefit concert. Anti-child abuse campaigners weren’t impressed.
WHERE CAN I GET IT: Shadows out on 12th Of May, the album Dystopia follows on May 19th, both on Charisma.
