She is known for her tumultuous private life and perennial presence in the tabloids, but even for Amy Winehouse the past weekend was an eventful one.
The Grammy-winning soul singer kicked off the weekend by showing up at Holborn Police Station on Friday afternoon to answer questions following an assault allegation. But after a doctor proclaimed her unfit to be interviewed, she spent the night in custody.
On Saturday morning, she admitted common assault, by slapping a man with an open hand, and accepted a caution, before evading the paparazzi pack that shadow her by skipping out the back door. A spokesperson for the 26-year-old singer later said she had apologised and the police would not be taking further action.
By Sunday, the slapping scandal was buried by a new one. News of The World reported that Winehouse had started a relationship with her manager’s assistant, Alex Haines, 22, while her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was in Pentonville Prison on charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Haines’s step-father, Roger Vine, said: “He honestly hasn't confirmed or denied it to me. He is a private person and I haven't pushed it.”
But Winehouse’s father confirmed the relationship and said he was shocked by it but suspected his daughter would have pursued Haines.
“I don’t like infidelity. But Alex could be the victim in all this.
“I can’t imagine Alex seducing Amy. He looks like Clark Kent.
“It was clearly the other way round”.
Making yet more headlines, Mitch said he wanted his daughter sectioned under the Mental Health Act as “the situation was getting out of control”.
But the 57-year-old taxi driver acknowledged his chances of having Winehouse committed to a psychiatric hospital were slim.
“What I think is best for Amy and what she thinks is best for her are two different things.
“Unless somebody is suicidal or they are a danger to other people - for example walking around the streets threatening to kill people – no one is going to section them.”
Still, the weekend’s Winehouse headlines were not all bad. The singer, who was nominated for two prestigious Ivor Novello awards last week, also made the news for finding her way on to the Sunday Times Rich List.
According to the 2008 list, the five-time Grammy winner has amassed a £10 million fortune, putting her tenth equal in the Young Music Millionaires category.
The eventful weekend was the only the latest installment in the singer’s increasingly chaotic life. Last August she was admitted to hospital following a reported drug overdose and has checked in and out of rehab a number of times since. In October she was arrested and convicted for drug posession, while on tour in Norway, and in December she was again detained by police in connection with the investigation into her husband. She was later cleared.
Her husband, who has been in prison for several months, is due to stand trial on June 2.

I completely agree with Geo, it's so nice to hear someone that shares the same opinion as mine about Amy for a change. Some people have such an aggressive view point on this talented woman.
Jane, Dorchester,
It seems many people are prepared to judge and look down upon Amy, but lets not forget she is an amazing talent, a funny outgoing girl, and she's in her early twenties. Let her enjoy the party while she's young, as long as she can differentiate between a party and a suicide bid. She needs support.
Geo, London, England
Has this loathsome woman being prosecuted yet for drug possession? If not, why not?
hg, London, UK
I don't care about this untalented car crash. I just wish she'd disappear. I don't care about her dreadful music, or her millions, or her drug habit, or her husband in jail. I do care about the police failing to arrest and prosecute her for breaking the law with drug taking and assault. CHARGE HER.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
I'm not sure how much to believe in this report; they can't even be consistent in spelling, so how can I trust that this is actualy news? They spelt Haines at least three different times during this report! I think Amy's life is Amy's life. Sure, it isn't the one I'd lead, but it's not the public's.
Anna, Brisbane, Australia
Amazing that since she cancelled her tour last year, all she's done is lurch about, and still managed to 'earn' an obscene amount of money and 'win' awards...very very lucky indeed...I'd have been imprisoned long since, suffering from 'one law for them'...
hazellove, Brighton, UK
How on earth can people justify liking her. If you like her music well that's fine- each to their own, but so many people seem to still support her even though she does drugs. If it was a non- celebrity, they'd be scorned from society and classed as a 'chav' or dosser. It just doesn't seem right.
Katy Mitchell, Manchester, UK
It is a great pity that some one like Amy is pursued by the press even though she is obviously in need of therapy. Why doesn't the record company do more to protect what is for them a valuable asset.?As to her relationships with others, she is an adult is she not?
Stephen Pain, odense, denmark
She's made ten million pounds whilst completely stoned. Its no wonder that cannabis is criminalised!
David, Cambridge
David, Cambridge,
Why give this drug addict so much press? There are other worthy people that could do with the limelight.
Jenny Livy, Christchurch,Dorset, Uk
She is probably the most amazing artist of our time,.. and if you judge her by what the tabloid's say,..... without listening to her 1st and 2nd album, then ... you are missing out my friend..... listen to them.
...peace

Warren Freeman, Toronto, Ontario, Canada,
A pity all that remarkable talent goes to waste. Let's hope she straightens up. It would be a real shame for her to end up as Billie Holiday.
Fernando Capó, Montevideo , Uruguay
so you got a pic of her witha long face, rememeber that pic is a millisecond shot, she is like so many people in britain except she has 10 million pounds. Too many people saying how terrible she is with out ever knowing what their own sons and daughters regularly get up to each week.
gary neale, coventry, uk
The woman's an absolute disgrace.
Liz, Sutton Coldfield,
take some of your money, buy a nice house on an island, don't tell anyone, live there... clean up, calm down. don't lose your money too
