Along with PJ Harvey and Courtney Love, Canada’s Morissette rewrote the rules for female rock stars in the 1990s. With her 30m-selling third album, Jagged Little Pill, the 21-year-old former teen-pop wannabe morphed into an emotionally tortured fury, at odds with the cruelty of the world in general and departing boyfriends in particular. Her songwriting partner and producer, Glen Ballard, lent a commercial edge to her angry, piercing vocals, which have mellowed with age as she has assumed a more traditional AOR role.
You Oughta Know Her signature hit, an enraged payback to an ex featuring a tempest of guitars and the almost screamed vocal hook “It’s not fair!”.
Ironic A ruthlessly catchy power ballad and her biggest hit to date - with sharp teeth and a cute, seesawing lilt.
All I Really Want A yelping, yodelling plea for “justice” that often opens Morissette’s live shows.
Hand in My Pocket In which she urges herself to calm down in the face of everyday calamities.
Head over Feet A softer sound and lyric that foreshadow her later, less abrasive work.
Thank U A cool, nagging chugger, written after a trip to India, in which she mysteriously thanks “terror” and “frailty”.
Unsent Her most unconventional song: excerpts from unsent love letters, with no chorus or hooks.
That I Would Be Good The Unplugged version of a song that takes revenge out of the equation.
So Unsexy Sprightly pop-rock, with a neat guitar riff over a hip-hop beat.
Everything Peace at last: an amorous ballad to someone who loves “my dark”. RS
