TRACK OF THE DAY: The Wolves (Acts I and II)
WHO: Bon Iver, better known to his friends as Wisconsin troubadour Justin Vernon.
WHAT: A raw and primal blend of folk, blues and gospel - how it would sound if Robert Johnson lent Mother Nature his guitar.
THE HYPE: ‘Like seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time’ - Village Voice
WE SAY: Artistic differences have never made such an artistic difference. After the sour dissolution of his band DeYarmond Edison, Justin Vernon took his guitar, holed up in his PA’s remote snow-bound Wisconsin hunting shack for four months, worked out his frustrations, scrapped with a few inner demons and produced possibly the most beautiful set of tracks you’ll have heard for some time.
The Wolves (Acts I and II) is genuinely timeless – any notion of time falls away, the modern world seemingly still to be invented, as Justin lazily picks away on his guitar while his falsetto floats somewhere above, locating the sweet spots in your eardrums.
Very possibly a real heartbreaking work of staggering genius.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: perhaps fittingly after spending so long in a hunting lodge, Justin finds no better way of chilling out than by shooting the bejaysus out of stuff playing Tour Of Duty for the PS3.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: For Emma, Forever Ago is released on 4AD on May 12.
