A 12-year-old trombonist last night became the youngest winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year award.
Peter Moore, from Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, battled against four other talented youngsters in the final of the competition at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
He said: “It feels so good to join all the big names that have won before, and think of how prestigious it is.”
Peter, who is from a family of brass players, moved from Northern Ireland at the age of 8. He has held the position of principal trombone of the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain for the past three years.
He is in his third year at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, and enjoys performing magic tricks. Peter said: “I think playing the trombone is fun. It’s something I always wanted to do. I didn’t want to pick a boring instrument.”
The other finalists were Jadran Duncumb, 18, from Sheffield, on the guitar; David Smith, an 18-year old flautist from Fife; Jim Molyneux, 17, a percussionist from Littleborough, Lancashire; and Erdem Misirlioglu, an 18-year-old pianist from Ipswich. The competition, which is in its 30th year, has no lower age limit.

Peter is not only very talented, he's articulate and very modest. He is a remarkable 12 year old and thoroughly deserved his win.
There's hope for our youth yet.
Well done Peter, you were brilliant!
Brian, West Midlands, UK
Robert Smith, I play in the same section at Wingates as Peter, with regards to a recording-

I think Peter was the most outstanding musician and won the competition hands down! Congratulations!
However, the BBC has truly ruined the viewing pleasure - even x Factor is better produced! Go back to the old concert format, I say, none of this larking about and audience participation.
Ellie Pinnells, Bristol, UK
Congratulations Peter!!! Technically brilliant with the musical insight and feeling of a much older person. May you have a long and distinguished career. I hope I will one day see you in concert. Thank you for introducing me to Tomasi's brilliant concerto - how about recording it soon?
Robert Smith, Portsmouth, Hampshire
He is six weeks younger than she was when she won.
mike smith, cardiff,
How is he the 'youngest ever' winner when he is the same age as Jennifer Pike was when she won in 2002?
Bianca S, Maidenhead, UK
congrats peter your mum used to teach me when you lived in northern ireland
cameron kirkpatrick, belfast,
Well done Peter.
In my opinion Peter has all the ingredients that make a 100% natural Trombonist, he appears to play all registers of the Trombone with the greatest of ease and flexibilty. Given just a few years of maturity, Peter, will I am sure be one of the very best of English Trombonists.
Nicholas Cooper, Rugby, Warwickshire
I am a strong advocate of having young people taught to play an instrument. Seeing so many youth hanging aimlessly around the streets today I just wish their parents would put a clarinet, flute or violin in their hands - it would make all the difference to their lives.
wendy, belfast, Northern Ireland
Congratulations to Peter Moore! I was absolutely bowled over by your stage presence and command of the trombone. You could teach our politicians a thing or two as regards maturity!!
Shirley Bowen, Blackpool, UK
Congratulations from Canada.
