TRACK OF THE DAY: Fear No Fear
WHO: Detachments, three Londoners with dark intentions.
WHAT: They call it ‘haunted house’, which sounds about right.
THE HYPE: 'Not only do they craft intelligent, forward thinking, infectious songs and dark club anthems with the right balance of musical knowledge, integrity, naivety and enthusiasm, they also so effortlessly look the part' - Trevor Jackson.
WE SAY: Like X-Men nemesis Magneto using his mutant powers for evil means, Detachments have taken things traditionally associated with uplifting pleasure and bundled them down turd-encrusted dark alleys. Layering sparse, tweaking acid house production over post-punk ESG percussive beats and chunky bass should make for a hands-in-the-air experience – and it does, but only in the sense that Detachments have taken you at gunpoint. Ominous and foreboding, it appropriates the more gothic elements of Belgian New Beat, bringing an industrial veneer to proceedings, with singer Sebastien’s gutteral rumblings putting the tin hat on the glowering effect.
But here’s the thing – even though your brain will try to resist, Fear No Fear works. Hypnotic, commanding and utterly riddled with the funk, it sounds fresh and distinctive. That doesn’t mean I’d have them over for dinner though.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: The critical groundswell is already underway – Playgroup’s Trevor Jackson is a huge fan, as is legendary DJ Andrew Weatherall.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Fear No Fear is out on July 7 on This Is Not An Exit.

Great write up. I saw them play Cargo and thanked my stars i wasn't listening to another fuzzy, forgettable indie band. I think grittier tracks with a darker aspiration are what's needed to move the scene forward, and Detachments should hopefully ride that relevant wave with aplomb.
