TRACK OF THE DAY: Violent & Young
WHO: Five rabble-rousing Californians with cucumbers down their pants and 22-inch rims. Metaphorically speaking.
WHAT: The sound of MGMT rifling through The Killers’ record collection and pulling out some Eminem.
THE HYPE: ‘This lot are basically one Jo Whiley play and a reasonably well-received televised festival appearance away from being massive’ - Popjustice.
WE SAY: Wading through the buzz storm that this year’s SXSW produced, one act kept cropping up, maybe not as the most topography-rearrangingly essential, but certainly as the most entertaining.
Iglu & Hartly’s party-minded synth-pop-rock-plastic-hip-hop shows had a fair few rubbing their chins in approval, and it’s not unreasonable to suggest that more approving nods are sure to follow over here.
Violent & Young offers skyscraping power guitar melodies spread over Kids From Fame synth pads, while Jarvis ‘Iglu’ Anderson does that Pretty Fly For A White Guy white rapper thing of sounding like he’s chewing every word the correct number of times to get the most out of them. The damned chorus is built for those moments at festivals where the frontman points the mic at the crowd, so best get practicing.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: The guys are currently working on their album with The Killers’ producer Mark Needham.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Violent & Young is released on Another Music = Another Kitchen on June 2.
