TRACK: With Lights Out
WHO: Red Light Company – a multinational five piece, floppy of fringe and stern of intent.
WHAT: goth-lite rock with a big presence and a big future – Glastonbury and Radio 1 beckon.
THE HYPE: ‘10 seconds of Red Light Company’s debut single With Lights Out are enough to tell you that the London band are in thrall to the blackened, glowering end of ‘80s rock’ Q
WE SAY: With their skinny jeans and black eyeliner, Red Light Company have been able to resist the Eighties neon glow that is slowly becoming ever more prevalent, and fashion their own kind of retro.
Gravitating towards a darker, more brooding domain, they following a more classic melodramatic path, one that mournfully takes them through The Cure and Echo And The Bunnymen’s overgrown gardens. Add to this Kiwi frontman Richard Frenneux’s androgynous posturing, which seems to suggest an air Brett Anderson and Brian Molko, and watch sales of their records, and knee-length black leather jackets, slowly rise.
IF I ONLY KNOW ONE THING: If it was down to immigrations, this lot might not be together. Japanese-American guitarist Shawn Day was hampered in his efforts to make it to an audition by Gatwick officials who were unconvinced he had the funds to cover his intended stay. It seemed though that Lady Luck had Sister Of Mercy on her iPod that day, as he was fortunately given a stay of execution.
WHERE CAN I GET IT: With Lights Out is released on 26th May on LaVolta.
