WHO: Surkin, aka dancefloor protégé Benoit Heitz.

WHAT: Dextrous Gallic party business.

THE HYPE: ‘Surkin is the f***ing man.’ - Missing Toof

WE SAY: It could reasonably be argued that we aren’t exactly in need of another purveyor of tricksy, filtering, tweaking French beats – it’s not as if Justice aren’t doing the job that we paid them to do, is it? Well you’d be wrong, wrong, wrong – painfully so when it comes to the young and talented Benoit Heitz.

Next Of Kin and the other tracks on the EP of the same name are less a collection of tunes, more an audio Wikipedia entry on the history dance music, in turn distilling house, electro, rave and hip hop into easily digestible chunks. But it’s not the fact that they’re York’s Notes for pillheads that makes them worth a squint. Looping up smooth Imagination-esque soul vocals and slicked-backed Eighties Jellybean Benitez synth mannerisms over some gleaming squelch funk, Next Of Kin is a graceful thing, one that will work as well in the big rooms of Fabric as the dining rooms of Dorset.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Surkin’s also pretty active as a remixer, most recently knocking one up for the aforementioned Justice’s DVNO.
