WHO: Wally De Backer, Belgian-born, Australian-based songwriter who’s been dubbed the Antipodes’ answer to Beck.

WHAT: Sampladelic magpie chillout.

WE SAY: Seeing that the policy of ransacking charity shops for distinctive breaks was formulated by the not-even-vaguely-serious Bentley Rhythm Ace and the Big Beat brigade, the thought of the practice still going on isn’t going to have Melvyn Bragg all of a flutter.

Praise be for Gotye then. Hearts A Mess manages to take a kitschy Harry Belafonte sample and build an entirely blissful track around it without the need for whoopee cushion theatrics, landing in spaced-out Avalanches territory as a result.

Tropical in its mellowness and confidently sparse, Wally’s soulful and soothing tones lounge seductively on a crumbly organ riff, making it feel like a declawed version of Nick Cave’s Red Right Hand.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Gotye’s UK deal came on the back of a single play of his Learnalilgivinanlovin on Sean Rowley’s BBC London show.
