TRACK OF THE DAY: Snake In The Grass
WHO: Barringtone – the new project of ex-Clor frontman Barry Dobbin.
WHAT: This is proper wonky pop. Not like that Alphabeat. Although their description of ‘a sonic miasma of bizarre urge-driven splendour’ has a ring to it too.
THE HYPE: ‘Tell me that hook isn't astounding. The haphazard sound just add to the charm. Very good’ - Pop Cultureddd
WE SAY: You know how sometimes in films you have an alien or robot who comes to earth and slowly starts getting fascinated by our ways and says stuff like, “so what is this ‘music of which you speak?'” And they then start making endearing but bizarrely uncoordianated attempts to copy us? This is exactly like that – pop made by Spock after watching T4 for an afternoon, if we can just overlook for a second the fact that he actually did make an album.
Oh sure, on the whole it sounds right – it’s pure, major-key fluff on the surface, but Barringtone keep playfully throwing curveballs – sweet melodies drunkenly veer off the road and end up in Lamb Lies Down On Broadway-era Genesis proggy ditches, while amateur dramatic flourishes mark the intro.
It’s heady, brainf*** stuff, but all the better for it. And Chris Moyles will probably hate it, which is a good sign.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: If you’re not a fan of this, you can partly blame Simian Mobile Disco’s Jas Shaw. He produced the thing.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Snakes In The Grass is released June 23rd on This Is Music.
