TRACK: Second Chance

WHO: London-based Kiwi Liam Finn.

WHAT: Textured acoustic rock.

WE SAY: Despite initially sounding like George Formby covering Elliott Smith at 78rpm while on holiday in Hawaii, Second Chance really is a distinctly beautiful thing. Melodically haunting, it builds layers of scrunched-up guitar refrains, strings and harps in a blanket of minor-key fragility that recalls Smith at his expansive best. Drums descend and the instrumentation goes haywire; but the ghostly tune keeps luring you in like an indie harpy.

If something seem a bit familiar about the arcing melodies, that's because he has inherited his songwriting skills from his dear old dad, Crowded House’s Neil Finn.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: His live shows are something of a spectacle. Finn plays every possible instrument available in a whirlwind of activity. Oh, and he is huge in New Zealand.
