Dame Shirley Bassey has pulled out of Friday's Nelson Mandela concert following an emergency stomach operation, her spokesman said today.

The 71-year-old was rushed to hospital last month and underwent stomach surgery, but had been expected to recover in time for the Hyde Park event.

The singer, who lives in Monaco, has now been advised by doctors not to travel.

Her spokesman Paul Carey said: "On the advice of her surgeon, Dame Shirley Bassey will now not be able to perform as scheduled at the Nelson Mandela 46664 concert.

"The dame is hugely disappointed and was looking forward to the show immensely.

"Dame Shirley has been advised not to travel at the present time, so as to aid her continued full recovery following surgery last month."

It is the second blow in as many weeks for the concert, organised to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday and raise funds for HIV and AIDS awareness and treatment in Africa. Last week, Amy Winehouse's spokesman admitted the singer may have to pull out of the event after she collapsed at her London home and was taken to hospital. She has since been diagnosed with the progressive lung disease emphysema.

Other artists scheduled to perform at the concert include Leona Lewis, Sugababes, Razorlight and Annie Lennox.
