TRACK: Are You Sensation

WHO: New York four-piece Tigercity, who have been medically diagnosed as having the funk.

WHAT: Smooooooth disco pop.

THE HYPE: "This is everything that we've been talking about for years in one shoe-shuffling sharkskin sensation. Just listen.” - Music For Robots

WE SAY: Common sense dictates that most people will by now have fallen victim to the ferocious charm of Hercules And Love Affair’s Herculean disco funk. But there will probably come a point when its glittery sheen wears off and we move on to alt-grime-bounce or something.

Tigercity have saved us the time of wondering what’ll happen to cool Herc by factoring in the variables and generating what H&LA will sound like in five years time. Using the decline of Studio 54 as a metaphorical starting point, turns out they relocate to the west coast for a wind-down after the excesses of the Seventies and find the good weather engenders a sunnier laidback disposition. This now being the mid-Eighties (bear with me, it makes sense in my head), the airbrushed, rolled-up sleeves pop of the likes of Hall & Oates is the order of the day, while the excitable groin funk of Prince ensures there’s still an element of naughtiness in the air.

Tigercity embody all that frivolity while fitting in perfectly with the current UK climate of high-gloss throwback pop – this isn’t conceptually too far from The Mystery Jets’ Two Doors Down, but it’s effortlessly suaver and cooler.

Are You Sensation works on several levels – you can play the irony card if that comforts you, but that’s not on Tigercity’s agenda. It’s crushingly radio-friendly and the limber percussive groove makes it damn near irresistible. But most of all it works simply because it’s silky, button-pushing daydream pop.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Rolling Stone magazine can’t get enough of Tigercity, declaring them ‘our new favourite band’ and have tipped them as an artist to keep an eye on. Not because they’d steal from your shop, but because they’re that good.

WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Are You Sensation is taken from Tigercity’s forthcoming mini-album Pretend Not To Love, which is out in September on Strange Feeling. Solitary Man, their debut single, is released on August 26.
