The British supermodel Naomi Campbell has been removed from the list of celebrity presenters at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebration due to her recent air rage conviction.
Campbell, who is active in Mandela's charity, 46664, and calls the former South African president her "grandfather", was on a list of potential presenters, compiled to introduce musical acts at the Hyde Park concert.
She was removed from the list following her arrest at Heathrow, when she was wearing a baseball hat featuring Mr Mandela's Robben Island prison number and Aids charity moniker 46664.
A source close to the concert said it was fair to say that Mandela was behind the decision.
"People were disappointed by what happened," said the source. "In the past she had spoken to Mandela about her anger. It's not the behaviour of a charity ambassador."
Campbell, 38, is still expected to attend a charity dinner with Mandela, but will only be able to sit in the grandstand at the June 27 concert.
The supermodel pleaded guilty on Friday to assault and disorderly conduct for kicking and spitting at police officers at Heathrow when one of her bags was lost during the opening chaos of Terminal 5. She was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community service.
Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis, Queen and Simple Minds are among the artists expected to perform at the concert, which will be hosted by the actor Will Smith.
The South African R'n'B singer Loyiso Bala is one of a number of acts from Mandela's homeland who has flown in to take part in the celebration. An ambassador for 46664, Bala will be performing Stevie Wonder’s As in a duet with Jamelia.
Amy Winehouse will also be performing, following a health scare last week when she was diagnosed with "early signs of what could lead to emphysema," according to a spokesman.
Dame Shirley Bassey pulled out of the event on Monday following doctors’ advice in the wake of emergency stomach surgery last month.
Picketers had planned to demonstrate at the concert and demand that Mandela speak out against Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe regime. But the former president quelled concerns last night when he broke his silence, accusing Mugabe of being a "tragic failure of leadership."
Mandela has said that, following the concert, he does not plan to appear in public again. Proceeds from the Hyde Park celebration will go to 46664.
The concert has been timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Free Mandela concert, which publicised demands for his release from Robben Island. He was held prisoner there for 27 years, during which time he was known only as “four double six six four.”
Mandela, who will turn 90 on Friday July 18, carried the identifier over to his charity in order to promote the message that people must never be reduced to numbers.

Great, her behaviour is tacky and unacceptable time and time again. Naomi is a poor role model and its about time!
Ted, Toronto,
Naomi Campbell should be ashamed by her antics at heathrow airport,
Not being recognised as an ambassador at the Nelson Mandela Concert may just make the Diva realise how seriously people view her behavior.. Well done to Nelson Mandela and the organisers for imposing the ban..

Naomi campbell has put good race relations back 50 years with her stupid and false accusations of racist comments. She should be removed from all charitable causes until she learns that children are allowed to have tempers in public, adults are supposed to be more responsible.
Simon, Nottingham, UK
I was disgusted at Mandela's speech the other night. He never once mentioned Mugabe by name. Perhaps if Mugabe was white there would have been more protests. I think Mandela and Mbecki are hypocrites.

Good, I'm glad her unacceptable behaviour is being recognised by Nelson Mandela and the organisers as being inappropriate for an ambassador and presenter at such an event. Let someone more deserving and humble have the honour.

Campbell may have symptoms of Tourette's syndrome. Her outbursts could well be more of a medical issue than one of moral failing.
John, Johannesburg, South Africa
good.
Edward, kingston upon thames,
Not a big fan of Naomi but she has to go but Amy Winhouse stays? I really doubt Mandela had anything to do with decision thats not exaggerate to make it more credible.
