I’m not far off being a middle-aged DJ. I’m setting up a sustainable farm where I can deal with my climatic demons from travelling so much. I don’t mind stepping down, because I never stepped up. I’m not surrounded by Ferraris and plasma screens.

I have a history degree from Oxford. The vast majority of people in bands have degrees. Most people who get to run around playing instruments can afford college. It’s a straightforward link.

When I rock up at Glastonbury, I think what a long road I’ve travelled since playing with a miners’ band in a Portakabin. It puts it in perspective.

You’re up against it when putting on festivals. The big boys try to shut you down - a ticket sold by us is a ticket not sold by them. When news of our lineup gets out, they offer a band double the money to play for them, not us.

I’ve no time for musicians who have a go because they’ve been given the wrong fags on their rider. The audience has been working in KFC all week and they’re paying your wages.

I don’t get recognised. We never had any hype - it’s always been a word-of-mouth thing. That gives you a great crowd. We are the opposite of celebrity in terms of how we are and how we got here.

I’ve been with the same woman for 14 years. Of course, the opportunity is there to stray: it happens every night you’re out. It happened last night. You have to imagine the situation the other way round and think how you’d feel.
